  • Although his writing is often held up as a model of English prose, Joseph Conrad was not a native speaker. English was his third language, after French and his native language, Polish.
  • One of Soviet Russia's most revered authors, Isaac Babel briefly worked for the Soviet secret police as a translator. Later he fell out of favor, and in 1940 he was arrested, tortured, and secretly executed by the Stalinists.
  • Vladmir Nabokov was a trained lepidopterist—an expert on butterflies and moths—and discovered several new species during his academic career.
  • At the time of his death at age 41, Franz Kafka had just finished correcting the proofs of one of his final stories, "A Hunger Artist." The story, which recounts the death by starvation of a performance artist, eerily predicted Kafka's own demise: Sickened by tuberculosis, he was incapable of eating and died of starvation.

Dr. David Thorburn is Professor of Literature at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Director of the MIT Communications Forum. He earned his A.B. degree from Princeton University and his M.A. and Ph.D. from Stanford University. Professor Thorburn previously taught in the English Department at Yale University for 10 years. Professor Thorburn is the recipient of numerous fellowships and awards, including Fulbright, Woodrow Wilson, and Rockefeller foundation fellowships. He was the founder and for 12 years the Director of the Film and Media Studies program at MIT. He has won teaching awards at both MIT and Yale, and he was named a MacVicar Faculty Fellow, MIT's highest teaching award, in 2002. Professor Thorburn is the author of Conrad's Romanticism and many essays and reviews on literary, cultural, and media topics in publications such as The New York Times, Partisan Review, and The American Prospect. Professor Thorburn has edited a widely used anthology of fiction, Initiation: Stories and Novels on Three Themes. Professor Thorburn's courses at MIT in modern fiction and film are among the most popular in the Humanities Department. He has lectured widely in the United States and Europe on literature and media.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Fantastic course This was a wonderful cruise through some beautiful, though at times choppy, waters. Thankfully, the captain, Professor Thorburn, was a pro with a deep knowledge of the seas we were traveling. My only previous contact with these writers was when I read Virginia Woolf's beautiful novel, Mrs. Dalloway. After this course, I am looking forward to tackling Joyce and Faulkner for the first time. Rated 3 out of 5 by Perhaps too much This is indeed a course for literary types ( the people who actually have read REMEMBRANCE OF THINGS PAST). Others may well find it too much. Too much analysis, angst and theory. Yes Dr Thorburn stutters: but there is no denying his passion for the subject. For those with background, and interest this probably is a great course. For the GREAT UNWASHED rest of us, just too much. November 11, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by one of the best literature course I am a great fan of TC Literature courses, especially Weinstein's many lectures. Here however, you have an equal and perhaps better lecturer. The lectures are incisive, clear and focus exclusively on the text making you want to stop the car and read. While these are all difficult works, the presentation is clear, doesn't assume expert knowledge, nor dumb us down and I will come back to them over and over. Of the probably 100 courses I have purchased, this is in the top 5 September 22, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Quality Instruction of Very Tough Pieces This course covers some of the most difficult works to digest in the English language. It might be titled Enjoying the Most Brutally Difficult Books Ever Written. Please note my choice of an alternate title. It starts with "enjoying". The books covered in the course are really difficult reads. Each book in the course could fill a course in itself. But Professor Thorburn makes it enjoyable to read, study and understand the pieces covered by the course. People have asked me, "is it possible to enjoy Ulysses?" You bet! With so much guidance and insight, you can enjoy these great works. I certainly did. I spent over a year on this course and was sorry when I reached the final lecture. Why so long, Chris? I read all the books presented in the course. Some I had read before, some I had started but never finished and some I had never attempted. So there's a lot of reading. Because I had new insight, the reading was a pleasure and most of the books covered are now among my favorite reads. Content, 5 stars. Now, about Dr. Thorburn's presentation. I love it. As a teacher myself, I could clearly see that he knows the subject and loves the subject. His style is very conversational which isn't easy to achieve in a studio. I felt like he was talking directly to me, as though explaining a good book over dinner. At times I wanted to just say, "but what about...?" I love the way he seems to be thinking through a thought, looking for just the right words to express how he feels. That's certainly not canned lecture. The delivery is personal. He gives opinions on people and books that go just beyond the basic scholarly lecture. At the same time, he doesn't drift. Value? A course that can get you through the most intense pieces of literature in English and make it fun is a great value. Here it is. I think some of the criticism for the course by others may be rooted in our age of "I want it fast." At the start of this review, I noted that many of the books covered could be handled by entire courses. Can Virginia Woolf be covered in 30 minutes? No. Can Professor Thorburn whet your appetite for "To the Lighthouse" in 30 minutes? You bet. This course is a treasure to me and one of the few I refuse to loan out! Yes, it's that good. If you wish you could read the more challenging books that appear on every list of all-time greatest books, get the course. Take your time. Watch a lecture, read a book, watch the lecture again. There's no rush. Enjoy the process. Highly recommend! July 16, 2013
