  • You should buy audio if you would enjoy the convenience of experiencing this course while driving, exercising, etc. While the video does contain visual elements, the professor presents the material in an engaging and clear manner, so the visuals are not necessary to understand the concepts. Additionally, the audio audience may refer to the accompanying course guidebook for names, works, diagrams, illustrations, and examples that are cited throughout the course.
  • You should buy video if you prefer learning visually and wish to take advantage of the visual elements featured in this course.   • Fossil fuels: Coal and petroleum are responsible for the remarkable industrial transformation of human culture over the past few centuries. Rated 5 out of 5 by from fun and educational Loved this course. All 24 lectures were a joy to go through. And I'll probably watch several of early lectures again so they sink in. I think all consumers ought to see this course to get a better understanding of the science of energy. We all tend to take for granted that our cars move and our lights turn on, but it is a complicated process that largely goes unnoticed. And this course is a good reminder of the ingenuity it takes to harness power and deliver to millions. To me each lecture came across as informative and unbiased. Basically, there's a checklist of pros and cons noted for each source of energy. Honestly, I didn't see any "sides" being taken on any of the issues. The set's theme was fine. Demonstrations illustrated a few ideas in each lecture. Professor Wysession has the walk and talk down just right. And his presentations have gotten better and better with each course.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fascinating and brilliantly presented course I thoroughly enjoyed this course and found it to be quite informative as well, even though I am a retired mechanical engineer. Professor Wysession provides a balanced overview of the development and utilization of essentially all forms of energy, including discussion of the physics, chemistry, geology, biology, and, in the last part of the course, political and economic aspects of each. Unlike some of the other reviewers, I did not feel that he was trying to "lecture" us on the subject of climate change/greenhouse gases, which unfortunately has become grossly over-politicized on both sides of the issue. He was simply presenting the facts as he sees them and allowing us to make up our own minds. There were some surprising facts that were presented. For instance, he shows that driving electric cars is more efficient and therefore produces less greenhouse gases than conventionally-fueled cars, even if the energy used to charge their batteries comes from fossil fuels. He points out that biofuels are generally very inefficient, unless they are based on material that is to be discarded anyway, such as burning trash or used cooking oils. I had realized that there was the issue of using valuable farm land to produce biofuels that would otherwise go towards feeding people, but I had not realized how inefficient these types of fuels are. One of the best aspects of the course was his use of "back of the envelope" calculations to provide estimates of the many numbers that are important in this field. For instance, early in the course, he showed that the basic SI metric unit of energy, the joule, is roughly equivalent to the energy required to raise an apple one meter at the earth's surface (0.1 kg x 10 m/sec^2 x 1 m). And he would repeat these numbers again at various points in the course to reinforce their significance. His presentation style was very good. He always looked directly at the camera and did not appear to be reading from a teleprompter. I only had a few minor quibbles about the course. As mentioned by some reviews of other courses, some of the graphics that were displayed (of which there were many) were not left on the screen for long enough to absorb them. For instance, there was an interesting color-coded map of the world that showed how much the average temperature had changed due to global warming. Before I could see what the impact was in the area where I live (Louisiana) the graphic was taken down. This might be an issue for TGC to address in future courses. I also noted a few minor typos in the on-screen notes. I also wished there had been more discussion of the process of extracting and refining oil and natural gas, since as Professor Wysession pointed out, we will not be able to get away from using these anytime soon. All in all, I can enthusiastically recommend this course to anyone with interest in the subject of energy. Although some math was presented, it should not be a problem for anyone with a high school physics and math background.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lessons on Fission worth the "price of admission" I watched the two lectures on Fission over and over a number of times, until I now have a good understanding how fissionable U-235 is mined/refined, how a nuclear power plant works, and how nuclear power plant waste accumulates and how it must be dealt with over time. There is also a brief introduction to "breeder reactors", and some good reviews of the events that frame the current situation whereby nuclear energy has such a stigma associated with it.
