And there is no better way to tell the story of the Founding Fathers than by pairing an eminent U.S. historian with the very institution that is most synonymous with American history, the Smithsonian.

These men —Washington, Jefferson, Madison, Hamilton, and many others—are larger than life in our collective memory, having near-mythical status. Similarly, The U.S. Constitution is the oldest continually-operating instrument of government anywhere in the world serving as the backbone to the world’s most powerful democracy. Yet, few among us realize just how turbulent, contentious, even suspenseful the process was to draft and ratify it. Told like the dramatic, turbulent story that it is, each lecture uses an individual Founder as a doorway through which to examine the process involved in crafting the Constitution. Less a biography of individuals, Professor Guelzo’s course is instead a composite biography of one of the greatest political documents in history.

  • Struggling and Questioning: The Articles of Confederation, crafted during the chaos of the American Revolution, was fast becoming an out-of-touch document at the start of the American experiment. In a series of lectures on the men who questioned the Articles, you’ll learn how the Founders quickly understood just how untenable they were for solving serious crises facing the new nation, and how they worked both separately and in concert to replace the Articles with someone more solid and sound.
  • Convening and Ratifying: You’ll plunge into the forge of American democracy, namely the 1787 Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia. Professor Guelzo helps you make sense of the tempest of arguments waged and committees established over representation, a new national executive, the issue of slavery, and human rights. You’ll also learn about the struggle for state ratification of the proposed constitution, in some ways an even more arduous task than drafting a new government.
  • Governing and Evolving: The story doesn’t end with the official ratification of the U.S. Constitution. The new government had to adjust to a new set of rules – and, in some cases, work tirelessly to change or adapt them. Once the U.S. Constitution was put into place, the nation saw the rise of political parties, the increasing connection of the new nation with Christianity, the dawn of a new national character, the creation of a national army, international conflicts, and domestic acts of treason.

The 36 Men Who Made America

What makes America’s Founding Fathers such an interesting way to probe the story of the U.S. Constitution is Professor Guelzo’s use of the perspective of these historic figures as fresh angles on unknown or often unconsidered perspectives. Familiar or unfamiliar, these 36 individuals were each, in their own way, integral to what makes the Constitution the complex document it is today. Each profile of these significant figures and their contributions is supplemented with images from Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery and the National Museum of American History, giving a human dimension to near-mythic figures such as:

  • Thomas Jefferson: Enlightenment philosophers like Locke, Montesquieu, and Adam Smith were crucial to the political ideology of Thomas Jefferson, and helped him see the glaring inadequacies of the Articles of Confederation.
  • Elbridge Gerry: As head of the Constitutional Convention’s Grand Committee, Elbridge Gerry helped to settle the question of what America’s new Congress would look like and how representation would be distributed among the two branches.
  • Alexander Hamilton: The Federalist Papers were so named by Alexander Hamilton as a daring act of aggression to give him the high ground over the anti-Constitutionalists, who saw themselves as defenders of federalism.
  • John Marshall: A veteran of the Continental Army, Supreme Court Chief Justice John Marshall did not hesitate to use the federal judiciary, in landmark cases like Marbury v. Madison, to save the republic from the dangers of Republicanism.
  • James McHenry: As Secretary of War under John Adams, James McHenry put the nation’s army and navy into play for the first time. His aim was to dispel the fantasy that professional armies were the enemy of the republic and militias its only salvation.
  • Aaron Burr: The case that resulted from the “assassin” Aaron Burr’s infamous duel with Alexander Hamilton (in which the latter was killed) actually highlighted the willingness of the Constitution to protect the liberties even of those who meant it harm.
  • James Madison: The last Founder to serve as president, James Madison’s tenure was subsumed by the War of 1812, a national catastrophe that history now looks on as an obscure conflict for which the United States of America was ill-prepared.
  • Alexis de Tocqueville: In his Democracy in America, the French writer Alexis de Tocqueville found that the glue holding the American republic together was not virtue so much as self-interest (which also made equality more important than liberty).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent!! A thirty-six lecture TC course can be a challenging trip, depending for success upon not only the subject but also the professor. Professor Guelzo carried me along throughout with his fine delivery and always interesting insights. A good deal of the success of this course for me is how Professor Guelzo seamlessly weaves in quotes from contemporary sources, sometimes at great length, as well as his excellent descriptions of people and events and top-notch graphics/illustrations. The success of this country in its founding and early years comes across appropriately as a near-run thing, not the sure thing that the perspective from some two hundred years on gives it. I could not wait until the next lecture and wished it to go on further. This is among the very best of my nearly one hundred TC courses, and I am fortunate to get it through the Great Course Plus. I am fairly familiar with the subject/period through graduate studies and research some decades ago. It was good to revisit through this course the people and events which used to be so familiar to me. But you need no such a background, however, to appreciate the course. Professor Guelzo supplies all you will need for understanding. Perhaps the most significant takeaway from this course for most will be that our Founders were not perfect, and the era often rivals our own in the levels or anger and violence over the issues of the day. Moreover, Professor Guelzo uses biographies to illuminate those many and varied issues. Though this course is about the Founders, it goes beyond the usual suspects to include, for example, a free black mathematician who played a key role in surveying/laying out the new capital in the District of Columbia. In fact, there is a good deal of very interesting information on social and cultural matters, not just the usual political/military themes. I am particularly appreciative of how well Professor Guelzo handles the Constitutional Convention, being in awe with how he deftly moves through the debates involving so many contending interests and concerns. These lectures confirm the sense that the Constitution is indeed a marvel and our firm foundation. There are a lot of issues, activities and events covered in this course, often in significant detail, on the new republic. Throughout, however, Professor Guelzo never lets us forget the presence of slavery and its relation the Founding Fathers. Not all those treated as Founding Fathers in this course were stellar individuals. The most significant example in this regard is Aaron Burr, today best-known for his duel with Alexander Hamilton, but involved also in a lot of shady activities, including treasonous conspiracy with the British. Though not a thorough-going debunker, Professor Guelzo does illuminate a good deal about other more highly esteemed Founders that serves to qualify one’s assessments. Most notable here is Thomas Jefferson, valued for intellect and role in writing the Declaration of Independence, but in Professor Guelzo’s estimation accomplishing little: “He had been governor of Virginia during the Revolution and failed to keep the British from chasing him out of office; he had been minister to France and Washington’s secretary of state—mostly without distinction. Jefferson’s electoral victories were due more to ‘the popularity of his doctrines, than by his strength of personal character, or by the practical wisdom of his public measures.’ Now, as president, the pattern repeated itself” (Page Course Guidebook, Page 258-259). Interestingly, Professor Guelzo ends the course by considering observations on the new nation by a French visitor in the 1830’s, Alexis de Tocqueville. From Tocqueville he takes aim at the still present tension in the United States between liberty and a push for equality that often seeks conformity/levelling, noting that misuse of power in such circumstances is not just a traditional top/down matter, but works the other way as well. We have our work cut out for us today. If you want to learn about the founding and early years of the United States, this 2017 TC course is the one for you. It is accompanied by a handsome 309-page course guidebook replete with many illustrations, good lecture summaries, and an annotated bibliography.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Lecture Content Did Not Relate Well To The Title While the content of this course is quite extensive and the lecturer tries to bring the subject matter to life, my basic comment is of not having the lecture material adhering more to the person who is the subject of the lecture's title and, instead, bringing in extraneous material that, I felt, was not that pertinent and not what I expected the lectures would be about. For example, the lectures concerning Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton should have touched more on these statesmen's lives, not discussing side issues of minor importance.

I wasn't so wild about lesser-known people, where they went to school ,etc. Would have been nice to see more on the Articles of Confederation period, and also daily life for the "non-Founders" during that time.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from In depth and detailed Judging from the title one might think this is a series of biographies of the leading lights of America’s early years. But the title is a bit misleading. In fact, the course is a behind-the-scenes look at the founding of the United States. The names are used largely as guideposts along the way. It discusses the factors that led to dissatisfaction with the Articles of Confederation, the maneuvering to call a constitutional convention, the extended debates within the convention, the battle to get the new constitution ratified, and a survey of the new country through the War of 1812. I have written in other reviews that Professor Guelzo is always clear, well organized, and entertaining. In this course he is well organized and entertaining but not always clear. His style is professorial but not stuffy or arrogant. My chief complaints about this course is that he gets into quite a bit of detail in some areas, and he makes extensive use of quotations from participants in the Constitutional Convention. He gets into the weeds about colonial finances in the early lectures on Robert Morris and Alexander Hamilton, and the minutiae left my eyes glazed over at times. The use of extensive quotations from participants in the Philadelphia convention lets us hear the unfiltered words of the delegates, but the convoluted eighteenth century syntax with its frequent indirect references is sometimes hard to follow. I would have trusted Professor Guelzo to explain their arguments in contemporary language without worrying that he was trying to lead us astray. The first lecture on Jefferson spends quite a bit of time on Enlightenment philosophy, with John Locke and Adam Smith getting as much mention as Jefferson. In fairness, the lecture’s title is Thomas Jefferson’s BOOKS, so I suppose he can’t be accused of false advertising. The course is thorough, and it includes a lot of detail about the workings of the Continental and Confederation Congresses and their finances that are not covered in most courses on America’s founding. In summary, this is an excellent, if a bit overly detailed, course on the creation of the US Constitution. Immediately after this I listened to Professor Thomas Pangle’s course on “The Great Debate: Advocates and Opponents of the American Constitution.” That is a more limited course that covers only the debate over the Constitution once it was presented to the states for ratification. Professor Pangle makes much more limited use of quotes from the participants, and he often follows with an explanation in layman’s terms, a technique I appreciate.

This course added a lot of background to the provisions I commonly encounter in cases and provided perspective about why the constitution was written as it was. None of the men who wrote it were perfect and some of them were scoundrels. Those very problems led to their emphasis on division of power to prevent too much concentration of power, a division that has served us well. I highly recommend this course.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Educational, Insightful and Entertaining Every Great Course professor has his own style. Some are conversational, some pedantic, some convoluted and arcane. One even acts out his characters. Dr. Guelzo, in bringing us “America’s Founding Fathers,” recites an epic poem - the “Lay of the Founding Heroes,” (as well as a blackguard or two). It is a grand performance; all he needs is a lute. Like any good minstrel, Dr. Guelzo is animated. Skillful gesture, facial expression and intonation work together to weave the spell binding story of America’s beginning. Thus not only is he a competent historian, but a master story teller. Most of his subjects are familiar names, though a few are not, but all played significant roles. Dr. Guelzo achieves his goal of telling the stories of these illustrious men not just by bringing us the facts of their contributions to the founding of the country, many of which you learned in high school history, but by presenting them as men (sorry, no women). We learn such things as how they grew up, where they went to school, what other Fathers they liked or didn’t like, their battles in war and in Congress (as if there was a difference!) their successes and failures in making money in the fledgling country, and much more. There is a lot of information in these lectures. If my high school history teacher had taught this course, it would have been an endless stream of facts and dates (that’s why I never liked history in school). But Dr. Guelzo elevates history to another level, almost an art form, bringing us living, human characters, heroes who have foibles and faults, but also do their heroic thing. He often uses something about one of his fatherly choices to expound upon what events were going on in the colonies at the time, thus keeping the man and his actions in the context of current events. For example, he uses the religion of Alexander Hamilton to launch a discussion of the Great awakening, and the influence of George Whitefield. When it comes to the Constitutional Convention and the controversies that followed, he makes fascinating the intricate interplay of opposing parties and their arguments, and even strategies. In history classes, we tend to take our Constitution for granted, and its writers and supporters as demigods who infallibly brought into being the best government in the history of the world. To see how the process really took place is truly enlightening. These men were human beings, just like ourselves, but fully dedicated to their task and well versed in both history and politics. It is courses like this that justify the Teaching Company's use of the phrase "The Great Courses." This is a wonderful, almost mesmerizing course. I couldn’t recommend it more highly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Course at Great Courses! Guelzo's style and content make this TGC course the BEST. He is engaging and links the history of the Founding Fathers in fascinating ways. His style was enough to draw me in and want more of what he had to say in each additional lecture. This is the first time that I can say I regret that there are only 36 sessions. I will pursue other courses by him and look forward to learn from him. This course is very enlightening about the struggles to form a single government out of so many individual states. It highlights the importance of what we now have in our Constitution because of the efforts of the Founding Fathers. Thank you for this course. I believe every American can benefit from this course.

Following the revolution to free the colonies from the monarchy, It would not be easy to form a central government. Professor Guelzo will take you every step of the way, weaving together the issues and the personalities. Highly recommended!!

The discs are simply stacked on a spindle, requiring the use to constantly pull multiple discs off to get to the ones below. This is just asking for scratched and damaged discs. It may save a penny or two, but it's a great inconvenience for the user.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from US History from a Fresh Perpsective In this course, Prof. Guelzo takes a unique approach to exploring the founding of the USA, and specifically the writing of the Constitution. Rather than follow a timeline, or a dry outline, he has cleverly packaged he story in 36 parts that each revolve around a participant in the process. Some are well known, such as Madison, Jefferson, and Adams. Others are obscure: Rufus King, David Brearley, Timothy Dwight, et al. So as you meet these men and learn their backgrounds, you’re also assembling a historical jigsaw puzzle that casts light on the first few decades of our country. It’s the kind of course that you can dip into in small bites. I took the audio version, which was fine and didn’t seem to lack anything. I listened over the course of a few months, whenever I had some free time, and I didn’t lose the thread of the story. Dr. Guelzo takes us on several rabbit trails but they are always germane to the subject. He’s a good speaker, but he has one speech quirk that started to drive me a little crazy. He pronounces the sound “OW” very strangely: for instance, the word “thousand” comes out sounding like “thayrzand.” But the content was solid, even though it’s a bit different from standard TGC fare.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent lecturer First, Dr. Guelzo is a fantastic speaker/presenter. He engages the audience, speaks eloquently, and draws upon a fair amount of source material. The subject is less about the history of the revolution, or the various individuals part in it, but more of what made the man who he was, his background, development in the earlier points of his life, and how he viewed the world. Interestingly enough, it also includes the international politics of the various powers and how they viewed America and the New World. One of the best course I've purchased so far.

I have always admired Guelzo--his discussion of the colonies and the American Revolution in the American History course was masterful. In this course, he makes intense and creative use of apt quotations from the writings of the Founding Fathers, and also employs the treasures of the Smithsonian in a very deft and subtle way. (In some other courses co-produced with the Smithsonian, the presence of that august institution has been overwhelmingly and obtrusively obvious--here it is subtle, very effective, and a tribute to the breadth of that collection.) Guelzo uses these quotes to demonstrate the deeply held beliefs and perhaps more importantly, the many points of difference held by many of our early leaders. The sometimes rancorous debates are very clearly brought out. These points make the fact that the Founders finally agreed on a Constitution close to a miracle. The lectures were very uplifting in a time that is also beset with rancorous argument. There is hope that reason and fairness will prevail. Very obvious in these lectures is Guelzo's deep respect for the Founders and what they wrote and believed in. A telling example is Guelzo's lecture on slavery discussions in the Congress. His reading of speeches against slavery by Rufus King, Gouverneur Morris and George Mason was moving. He also carefully explained the opposing positions by other members of the Congress. He ended with a very thoughtful discussion of where the Congress's position on slavery would eventually take the United States.

It would also be very useful to anyone who feels certain that his/her political views are correct and that those who oppose them are certainly wrong, for Professor Guelzo has constructed a course that brilliantly presents the critical -- and ongoing -- questions faced by America's Founders in a way that not only allows us to understand the varying points of views held by that remarkable generation, but also to see the Founders in the context of their times, warts and all. It is easy to err in thinking that "the past" is settled, if not graven in stone, and that the major issues that confounded intelligent persons at the time have long been resolved. Easy, perhaps, but wrong! In each lecture, Dr. Guelzo presents relevant -- and usually quite fascinating -- biographical information about one or more of the figures central to that lecture, as well as sketching in the economic, social, and political context in which the particular challenge or dilemma occurred. He then gives us first-person arguments -- from the Founders as well as from others of their time -- that vigorously propose varying options for resolving that current challenge. It is to his credit that just as one feels one's self agreeing with the arguments that course "x" is the obviously wisest choice, he then presents an opposing viewpoint so powerfully that optional course "y" also seems to possess great merit. The great virtue of this method is that it allows us to see that the Founders -- men of wide learning and experience, as well as, almost without exception, persons of great moral standing and firmly held principles -- really had no obvious "right answers" but, rather, just like we in our own times, were confronted with considerable unknowns in which a wrong step could bring grave, if not even catastrophic, consequences. Furthermore, many of the questions that most bedeviled them could not, by their nature, be forever resolved. Yes, they came to decisions that set the country upon a certain course for the foreseeable future, but the most troubling issues -- racial inequality, the balance between seeking individual liberty and freedom while heeding the needs of all citizens, and how to best guard against despotism from above coming from the concentration of power in the few while also warding off tyranny that could swell up from below -- must always be readdressed again and again over time. Lastly, this course helps us appreciate -- in a most valuable lesson for our own fractured time -- how these strong men of great principle nonetheless were able to reason together, and compromise, in order to move forward. There is no more certainty in political affairs than there is in life in general; there is always the risk of a misstep. But, as the Founders' lives illustrate, perhaps the greatest risk is to do little if anything because an inability to compromise leads to stalemate. Simply put: a wonderfully rich course resulting from the ongoing fruitful collaboration between The Teaching Company and the Smithsonian! Highly recommended!
