The Perfect Time to Learn Cosmology

An expert on the dynamics of supermassive black holes at the cores of galaxies, Professor Whittle is an astronomer with a gift for making his subject vivid, understandable, and awe inspiring. For example, in explaining the vastness of the universe, he asks you to imagine yourself as a stupendous giant making billion-light-year strides through the cosmos, hour after hour. Even at this ultra-warp-drive pace, you would always find yourself in the middle of a uniform mist of galaxies with no end in sight.

Professor Whittle notes that we are the first generation ever to know in detail just how the universe came to be. Right now is the perfect time to learn cosmology, since researchers have just completed the work on more than a decade of breathtaking discoveries. The picture they have assembled is truly stunning in its richness and coherence and includes such findings as these:

  • The universe began 13.7 billion years ago in a hot big bang.
  • The geometry of the universe's space is "flat," supporting the theory of a cosmic origin in a rapid, inflationary burst of unimaginable speed.
  • Ripples frozen in space at the instant of inflation formed the seeds from which galaxies and all later structure grew.
  • The universe will expand forever at an accelerating rate.

Take an Intimate Look at the Universe

Einstein famously said, "The most incomprehensible thing about the universe is that it is comprehensible." As Cosmology shows, the universe is comprehensible at a remarkably deep level in simple, intuitive terms. As the course unfolds, you are introduced to the major clues that have gone into deciphering the mystery of the cosmos. Some of these clues involve concepts at the cutting edge of astrophysics, such as dark matter, dark energy, and cosmicinflation. Professor Whittle introduces these and many other ideas with inventive analogies and then builds on his explanations.

For instance, one of the most extraordinary aspects of the cosmic microwave background is that it tells us the universe was ringing with sound during its first 380,000 years. It took a satellite measuring minute fluctuations in the microwave background to disclose this property of the early universe. But the story does not end there because scientists can say a great deal about this primordial sound and what it means:

  • Was it loud? Variations in the microwave background indicate that the sound was the approximate decibel evel of front-row seats at a rock concert. (Professor Whittle picks Pink Floyd as a suitably deafening example.)
  • What's the pitch? The primordial sound was 50 octaves lower than the range of human hearing. Just as larger organ pipes make deeper notes, so the universe's "pipes" are cosmic in size and make extremely low notes.
  • Was it musical? As you hear in Professor Whittle's different re-creations of the primordial sound, it had a harmonic complexity with a quality somewhere between a musical note and noise.
  • What does it tell us? The primordial sound included pressure waves destined to grow into the largest structures in the universe.

At Home in the Cosmos

There is also much to see in Cosmology. In addition to showing magnificent telescopic images, Professor Whittle illustrates his lectures with hundreds of informative diagrams, together with computer animations from NASA and other sources that give a three-dimensional perspective on the universe. You take a tour of our local supercluster, watch galaxies collide, and see "rivers" of galaxies flowing toward pockets of invisible dark matter, among other compelling simulations. Such a comprehensive, in-depth presentation is only available with this course and not in any classroom, book, or documentary.

Professor Whittle enriches his lectures with a number of simple equations, such as Hubble's Law. But you don't need to follow the math in detail, since he always restates what's going on in plain English. Indeed, Professor Whittle suggests that we may be hardwired to understand the universe at an intuitive level, since we evolved on a planet embedded in an astrophysical setting and subject to the same laws of physics that apply throughout all of space and time. We are truly at home in the cosmos.

Prepare to Be Surprised

Nonetheless, prepare to be surprised by some of the startling ideas you encounter in Cosmology:

  • Matter and energy are only the positive side of reality. There is an equal and opposite negative side that resides in gravitational fields. Together they sum to zero, implying that the universe came from nothing.
  • The annihilation of virtually all matter by antimatter just after the big bang means that every proton and electron in your body has survived a game of Russian roulette with a billion bullets and one blank.
  • Dark energy has the crucial property of making the universe fall outward, rather than inward, which is why the expansion of the universe is accelerating.
  • Our universe may be only one of many, in what has come to be called the multiverse. If each of these universes has different laws of physics, we should not be surprised that at least one—ours—happens to have the parameters that are conducive to life.

Looking back on the wealth of recent discoveries about the universe that are covered in this course, Professor Whittle can hardly contain his excitement. "I wouldn't be surprised if 500 years from now, these two decades will be seen as a period of breakthrough, not unlike the periods of discovery we associate with names like Copernicus, Newton, Darwin, or Einstein. ... One might say that right now is when cosmology has finally come of age."

    Cosmology takes the entire universe as its subject, not just its form, structure, and contents, but also how it was born and how it has evolved. You look at the origin of cosmology in creation stories before taking a whirlwind tour of the whole course. x

    This lecture introduces the hierarchy of structures in the universe: from planets to stars, galaxies, galaxy clusters, and larger groupings of galaxies called the cosmic web. Since light travels at a finite speed, looking far away also means looking far back in time. x

    The universe is lumpy at the scale of galaxies and galaxy clusters. But at larger scales it seems to be smooth and similar in all directions. This property of homogeneity and isotropy is called the cosmological principle. x

    The most familiar constituents of the universe are atomic matter and light. Neutrinos make up another component. But by far the bulk of the universe—96%—is dark energy and dark matter. The relative amounts of these constituents have changed as the universe has expanded. x

    Take a quick trip through the history of the universe, from the big bang to a conjectured future of ever-accelerating expansion. Eight key stages are in between, including the condensation of atoms, the birth of the first stars, and the formation of galaxies. x

    Astronomers use a "distance ladder" of overlapping techniques to determine distances in the universe. Triangulation works for nearby stars. For progressively farther objects, observers use pulsating stars, the rotation of galaxies, and a special class of supernova explosions. x

    Expansion and Age
    Measurements of the Doppler shift of galaxies in the early 20th century revealed that essentially all were moving away from us. The more distant ones are moving faster, in direct proportion to their distance. This is the famous Hubble Law, which implies an initial "big bang." x

    Distances, Appearances, and Horizons
    Defining distances in cosmology is tricky, since an object's distance continually increases with cosmic expansion. There are three important distances to consider: the emission distance, when the light set out; the current distance, when the light arrives; and the distance the light has traveled. x

    Atomic matter comprises less than 5% of the total cosmic census. This realization came with the discovery of dark matter (23%) in the 1970s and dark energy (73%) in the late 1990s. They are "dark" because they are detectable only by their subtle gravitational effects. x

    Cosmic Geometry—Triangles in the Sky
    Einstein's theory of gravity suggests that space could be positively or negatively curved, so that giant billion-light-year triangles might have angles that don't add up to 180°. This lecture discusses the success at measuring the curvature of the universe in 1998. x

    Cosmic Expansion—Keeping Track of Energy
    Has the universe's rate of expansion always been the same? You answer this question by applying Newton's law of gravity to an expanding sphere of matter, finding that the expansion was faster in the past and slows down over time. x

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely Outstanding! The Best of the Best I have purchased more than thirty Great Courses, and have enjoyed them all. Several were excellent. But until I started "Cosmology: The History and Nature of Our Universe," I didn't really know how good it could get. As a former astronomy student (forty + years ago) I appreciate how difficult this subject is to understand. That's why I am so impressed that Dr. Whittle is able to make cosmology so accessible. His manner is confident, clear and engaging. He obviously loves his subject. His use of figures, photos, graphs and the rare equation illustrate his message perfectly. At one time he said that he was presenting some concepts that weren't usually discussed outside professional circles, and some were certainly new to me. I felt privileged that I was being let in on the inner circle and learning things that hardly anyone else knew. Also, it was great to be brought up to date on more recent developments in cosmology. It's true that a person with no science background at all might find it a little difficult to follow. Dr. Whittle acknowledges this now and then, and let's his viewer know that it's okay if he doesn't quite get a particular detail. Even so, the concepts are there and anyone determined enough to follow it through will come away much better acquainted with the story of our universe. I think I'll go watch it again.

Professor Whittle joins Fillipenko, Degrasse Tyson, and Meyer on the Mt. Rushmore of Great Courses space sciences professors, IMHO. He has an engaging personality, a clear lecture style, and uses visuals beautifully and skillfully. Easily 5-star in every respect.

The author makes things as clear as they can be given their complexity and technical nature of the theory and evidence. The only limitation is that the course is probably a touch out of date--not wrong, just not including some recent reports or findings. Great Courses ought to ask instructors in fast-changing fields to add a new lecture, could be just sitting at his desk or something, to update things that have changed. But not that much has changed in the meat of things, so I recommend this to anyone curious about what's up there in the sky and how it got that way.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exciting course This is the most exciting course I have watched. The instructor has a gift for explaining very complex subjects. His enthusiasm is catching. I would not recommend this to the casual viewer, for it gets quite technical at times. I frequently stop the DVD to peruse a graph in detail or backup to to go over the material again. In fact, I will probably watch the whole course again sometime after this first viewing. But for those who are prepared to think as well as listen, it a a most rewarding course.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from When I was young, I actually dreamed of becoming a theoretical physicist, however, my math and physics aptitude wasn't quite up to par, so I ended up as a physician. I never lost the fascination for the topic though, and this course definitely satisfies! I have many of the Great Courses and this hands down is my favorite! Warning! While the professor does an excellent job of trying to make very complex material comprehensible, this course will challenge all those who don't have some background and/or significant interest in the topic. I have gone through the course several times and I learn something new each time. I can't help but enjoy the story of our universe the more times I hear it told!! If you are not already a professional working in this field, brace yourself, dive in, and enjoy!! You will learn a lot and you won't regret it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wow - Great Course I really learned a lot in this course and unless you are a cosmologist, you are likely to find the same. This professor is great at taking difficult and often abstract concepts and explaining them so they can be understood. For example, he not only tells you how old the universe is but how we know how old it is and how this is calculated in various means that give us confidence in the answer. He also explains why there is dark matter and dark energy in one of the best ways I have ever seen. He has the right balance of graphics and spoken word and when the graphics are used, they are perfectly suited. Tied for my favourite course (with Understanding the World's Greatest Structures) and after I watched it, I could not fail but recommend to everyone I knew who had any interest in the cosmos, astronomy or physics.

I am on my 4th viewing of this course and cannot imagine a better presentation, set of content, or value. What math is there is not essential, but much appreciated -- and it is really not hard either. Dr. Whittle's explanations and teaching methods are just absolutely top-notch. I am hoping that Dr. Whittle will update this course in a few years -- I will surely want to own the updated version too.

Astronomy has been a hobby of mine and I've even done graduate study in physics and astronomy. Still I learned new things from this course and it was great fun at the same time. Science teaching just doesn't get any better than this.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Magnificent. A Wonderful Course. This is one of the finest courses I have ever taken, anywhere, in every respect. Really. And I wish I could recommend it to everyone - but choose carefully. First, the course: The subject matter could not be more inherently fascinating and wonderful - the birth and evolution of our universe, from quarks to galactic clusters, from the big bang to (perhaps) the disintegration of all atomic matter through proton decay in trillions of years, from quantum mechanics to general relativity to (hopefully) a theory of quantum gravity, with stops for the 96% of the universe which is dark matter and dark energy along the way. There was not a moment which lost my attention. And then the professor: Prof. Whittle may have a few equals, but certainly no one surpasses him as an extraordinary teacher. He is superbly organized, beautifully spoken, adept at exceptionally helpful metaphors and analogies, and unfailingly enthusiastic about the awe he feels for his subject. Perhaps most importantly, he can explain necessarily complex ideas with remarkable clarity. And therein lies the rub, at least for some. This is, by the standards of most courses for a general audience, relatively advanced and difficult. Much of the course will benefit from repeated viewings. And Prof. Whittle does include a fair amount of math, although nothing is beyond high school level. (The math, as he mentions several times, can indeed be skipped with little loss of appreciation for the qualitative, descriptive aspects of the story.) I do want to be clear, however, that I greatly appreciate The Great Courses' providing a science course at this more advanced level! I very much hope more such courses will be offered, including regular updates of this one! The visuals, as might be expected, are wonderful - plentiful and outstanding pedagogically, as well as extraordinarily beautiful. And the Course Guidebook is, likewise, very complete and well done. So - this should certainly not be your first course in astrophysics and cosmology. (The Great Courses' other excellent and more basic offerings in these areas, as well as in modern physics generally, would be very worthwhile as preparation.) And patience will be required. Given that, it has my absolute highest recommendation as one of the most wonderful educational experiences available anywhere.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Out of This World An amazing and well presented course, literally and figuratively "out of this world." I have a Ph.D. in physics, but spent my entire career in the electronics industry where atomic, molecular, and solid state physics come into play. For a long time, I didn't have much interest in "Big Physics" on the Cosmological or (conversely) Elementary Particle scales. I decided it was time to explore these areas and Dr. Whittle's course really brought the whole history and nature of the universe alive. He used the right mix of detail from math and physics to give sufficient depth, while including analogies, props, photographs, computer generated videos, and graphs to explain concepts in layman's terms. He did an excellent job of explaining the difference between what is known and confirmed by experiment and what is still based on hypothesis and/or speculation. Dr. Whittle's presentation style is excellent. He maintains a consistent unhurried pace, uses body language and facial expressions appropriately to add emphasis and speaks with inflection. His occasional humor is on the mark. Dr. Whittle has an engaging speaking voice; listening to him reminded me of David Attenborough narrating a nature documentary. I could listen to either one of them for hours. The presentation material was great with stunning photos, easily discernible graphs, and well done videos. Two minor complaints are in order here though. There were a few typos in the on screen text banners; e.g. "Super-Partner Particle" vs the correct "Super-Particle Partner". I think TTC could do a better job of editing. Also, Dr. Whittle's graphs were key to explaining the concepts, more of them should have been included in the course guide. OTOH, the special section in the course guide on math-physics was great and appreciated. As a non-astrophysics physicist, I went into this course with a bit of skepticism about "grand theories of the universe". Dr. Whittle made me a true believer in esoteric things like the Big Bang Theory, Inflation, Dark Matter, and Dark Energy (still a bit skeptical on this last one). After taking this course, it became clear how the universe could be and was created from "nothing". This course is not only mind expanding but mind-blowing. I will never look at the night time sky again in the same way, Dr. Whittle's course has made that experience incredibly richer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Cosmos in a Nutshell This a wonderful course for those who have read Hawking's books on cosmology or watched Brian Greene on PBS and want to know more. Professor Whittle teaches the nuts and bolts of the universe and goes into detail. He even provides some equations, very simple algebraic equations that get close to calculus but not quite, that explain concepts of cosmology to a depth that cannot be achieved with words alone. If you have ever had algebra you can follow the derivations with a little effort. The course does require some effort but for every minute of effort you put in, you gain a deeper understanding of how it all works and you will know much more than just words to toss around at a party. The course so captivating that I have watched it twice in several weeks that I have had it in my possession.

The time spent on the various topics is well balanced, the graphics (photos, graphs, animations) are very good and helped with my comprehension. If you want to know how the big bang led to the creation of our universe and all of its constituents, this course will not disappoint!

Professor Whittle is crystal clear, concise, organized, and in full mastery of his material; but he is much more than that, and that is why I am writing my first review for the Courses. His enthusiasm for each of theme is infectious, and he has worked hard to make each theme accessible to the reasonably intelligent layman: I particularly cherish his dozens of illustrations of almost unimaginable cosmic distances, speed, densities, and sizes by reference to human-scaled experiences like the speed of an eye-blink, the size of a hand, the phases of human gestation, the volume of a sugar cube, spotting a fly in a football stadium, etc. The mathematically adept can plunge into the formulas in the Math-Physics Appendix, but Professor Whittle permits us liberal arts people also to grasp the concepts by his many charts, illustrations, movies, and even sounds. The material is majestic, and Professor Whittle's presentation is masterful. Thank you and Bravo!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not for the Faint of Heart Professor Whittle brings the full compliment of his education and study of the cosmos into this 36 lecture tour de force of the evolution and structure of the universe. Like other reviewers, I had to review some lectures two or three more times to gain a better understanding of the concepts Whittle presented. Those without a college math background be forewarned: there are mathematical equations in almost every lecture; it's nothing more that some basic college algebra and I found it fun to watch the lecture with calculator in hand to do some numbers crunching. So for the non-math viewers the guide that accompanies the course is indispensable. .

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exceptional Content: If you're looking for a nice, relaxing, documentary-style lecture series that you can passively enjoy while making dinner, this course is probably not for you. Rather, a viewer should prepare to make a real commitment of attention and time. Even with my pretty decent (layman's) background in cosmology, I find myself having to re-watch each lecture multiple times, as well as go through the course notes slowly and methodically. But the reward is a much greater understanding of our highly dynamic universe and its contents, as well as its likely origin and ultimate fate. Presentation: I assume the professor is reading from a script, and yet you'd have a difficult time knowing it. His delivery is entirely natural and exceedingly easy to follow. For this reason, I have no trouble watching him speak for several straight lectures. Side note: For fellow Brian Greene fans, know that this lecture series covers a lot of ground that isn't tackled in much detail in, say, "Fabric of the Cosmos." Personally, I find this series and Greene's books to be very nicely complementary.

Although the subject is very complex, specialy for a layman like me, Professor Whittle was able at the same time to satisfy people with and without technical background, and motivate both to go till the 36th lecture with that taste of "I want more!". Every well-educated citizen should go through this course, which is indispensable for a far better understanding of the universe and of ourselves as an intrisinc part of the universe, not less, but even more than stars. You will understand why we are truly made of stars! I also have an interest in theology, and found this course very important for those who value the old schools of the Eastern tradition. I deeply believe that we need to build bridges between the best of the Eastern Philosophy with the best of the Western Science. If you also agree with this, do a favor to yourself and go through this trully transformational course. Congratulations, Professor Whittle - I want more!

You will come to have reverence as you realize you are made from from star dust. I recommend watching the course once and again after several months. You will learn things you missed the first time around in this wonderful 36 lecture series. It is the very best of over 40 courses I have enjoyed....

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Mind-Blowing Stuff Another Great Course from the Teaching Company. The stuff in this course is amazing. I suspect that potential buyers of this course who are astrophysicists have been dulled by their immersion in this amazing stuff. But, who among us mere mortals, won't be blown away by the fact that by seeing stars that are light-years away are not just looking across great distances, but are also looking back in time. Okay, so I probably don't understand every little tidbit of the "Inflation Theory" but I picked up enough to be blown away by this survey of what humankind has learned about the cosmic origins. The professor is well organized and easy (for a physicist) to understand. He does an excellent job of explaining this material and helpfully points out where we can just let the physics wash over us rather than trying to understand every detail. I would encourage everyone to purchase and view this course. I think most people will be blown away by its significance. Thank you for this Great Course

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Cosmology: The History and Nature of Our Universe Remarkable, awe inspiring, stunning only begin to describe Professor Whittle's lectures on cosmology. Yes, some of the lectures are difficult, but his use graphs as well as other visual aids along with frequent, well-chosen metaphors and analogies make the subject matter much more understandable. His lectures are exceptionally well organized, and he concludes each lecture with a helpful summary. But it's the subject matter that really amazes: how clues in the cosmic microwave background radiation reveal the origin of the universe as well as answer questions about the distribution of visible and dark matter in the present day universe, how and toward what end the universe is evolving, how the fundamental forces and particles emerge from the hot, dense, nascient universe in the first fractions of a second. He also explores more speculative theories: the possibility of a multiverse, the Anthropic Principle, as well as many other topics. This is a course well worth the expense and effort.

Professor Whittle presents every topic in the course in a clear, concise manner. His presentations are understandable by a person with little or no scientific background, yet is interesting to a scientist. He includes just enough mathematics to keep scients happy without overwhelming the non-scientist. The graphics are outstanding. He moved form topic to topic, building on the ideas he presented earlier. Never boring, enthusiastically presented.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Course I can't be complimentary enough about Prof. Whittle's course. It is a terrific blend of detail and big picture with a lot of "what it means" for the layman. I have a life long interest in cosmology but have not read anything recent about the state of the field and was amazed at how much progress has been made in the last 10-15 years. Prof. Whittle's presentation is a measured, lucid review that allows understanding and elicits awe. No thinking member of the species should fail to study the broad themes that this field is illuminating.
