  • The surprising relationship between wolves, elks, and river ecosystems in Yellowstone National Park: When the park's wolves were almost hunted to extinction, populations of elk skyrocketed while nearby river ecosystems declined. Freed from the pressure of predation, the elk were able to graze these fragile ecosystems, damaging them significantly. When wolf populations were restored, the elk returned to their traditional habitats, and the river systems revived.
  • The paradoxical relationship between humans and bacteria: As people increasingly use antibacterial soaps, antibiotics, and disinfectants to protect themselves against microbial disease, they drive these organisms to develop a tolerance to these products, putting human beings at an even greater risk of infection by "superbugs."

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An Excellent Course! An Outstanding Professor! Too many people have their head-in-the-sand when it comes to discussing this earth and the many ways the ecosystem sustains us. Too many people only think of the earth in greedy terms as a resource to be developed and make them wealthy, as an extraction pit, or as a garbage dumping ground. I live in the state of Utah, and out of all the Western States, we are Number 1 out of 11 when it comes to polluting and destroying the ecosystem. I see everyday how people NEED to see this course. They need to understand that when we destroy the earth, we are really only hurting ourselves. This course is needful, and is excellent. I especially enjoyed the concepts taught in the second half of the course. Dr. Strauss is a wonderful teacher, and a solidly good man.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very Agenda Oriented / Biased I bought this realizing that it was going to be pressing the whole "Climate Change" and "Anti-Human" rhetoric pretty hard. It does so I am not disappointed or surprised. EG Strauss is either reiterating what he was taught or, he has been researching diligently only one side of the topic. He mentions many things that are part of the mantra found in any eco-aware group which are taken as fact and yet, are not and he presents them as "facts". Since I work in an emerging "green" tech developing new concepts to enhance the local ecology, I thought it would be good to know what is being taught today. I was part of the late 60's and early 70's Ecology Movement and have come to realize all that was said then was not completely true and it is disturbing to see that these things and variations on them are still being taught. Although I find myself arguing with the course a lot, I believe it IS a good course that will probably never be taught in a truly balanced manner. It will give the viewer an in depth look and idea of the field but, it is my opinion that it should be looked at as a "framework" to build on and not as the "be all, end all" of the subject.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good Material but Disjointed The professor is extremely well versed, invested in the subject, and non-judgemental in our handling of the environment. However I found it difficult to focus much of the time because it was somewhat disjointed. Although he gave examples of points throughout the course, I would like to have seen more "structure" either in the beginning of the lecture or a recap at the end - I lost my train of thought (and learning!) with all of the tangents taken for examples (which were important but refocusing should have been done). Although the use of slides was appropriate, with many excellent photos, again, I lost the context of the conversation. I "powered" through the course because I felt it important to at least hear and understand the issues at hand, but felt my recall of the course simply wasn't good whereas from many other courses, was excellent. I think the course should have been confined to 24 lectures and my guess is most of the salient points could have been made. You won't make a mistake purchasing the course, and I would do it again, but improvements could certainly be made.

The professor fine, but content seemed to be stretched without real purpose. I would not recommend this course to others.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ecological goldmine! DVD review. ©2009. Guidebook 123 pages. OMG! This was a fantastic journey, and I’m so glad to have gotten this one. I had reservations at first due to some pessimistic comments; but the topic has always been an interest of mine, so couldn’t resist. First off, I want to review Dr Strauss. Sure, like any other presenter, he could reduce the number of times he says, “You know” and “um.” Actually it didn’t bother me at all. When he is on a roll and really caught up in the spirit of the lecture, there are very few of them. I found Dr Strauss to have very good presentation skills: he uses hand and body gestures very naturally; in fact, he often uses his entire body to convey information. Eye contact I rate an A+ because he made me feel like he was lecturing in my living room just for me. He’s very enthusiastic, clearly loves what he does, and I found his excitement contagious; furthermore, he comes across as highly knowledgeable and genuinely affable, especially as each lecture closes. He uses a lot of metaphors and analogies. He’s got a sizeable vocabulary (which I appreciated), so this ain’t dumbed down. I learned a lot as far ecological jargon goes. Organization: This course isn’t as typical as other TGC courses, which are usually arranged chronologically or thematically. It’s roughly divided into three parts: (1) scientific principles or ecological drivers, (2) integrated processes or communities, (3) human responses to environmental concerns. Moreover, many lectures alternate, with one being scientific and the other highlighting human interaction with that principle; in essence, theory comes first, and then putting theory into realm of practice. Broadly speaking, I found the course to be well organized in that it also moves through Bloom’s Taxonomy, with a heavy emphasis on analysis, synthesis, and evaluation. If you’re used to courses hovering around the lower-order domains of knowledge and comprehension, then you might not easily absorb the content. You’ve got to actively connect the dots. Content: Loved it. Couldn’t get enough, in fact. Every lecture had gads of research, data, charts, graphs, pictures, and realia such as turtles, butterflies, etc. One extra bonus for me was having so many research experiments described in detail, especially those illustrating how ecologists go about collecting data. I’ve often wondered about that. Loved how he brought the course full circle. He began early on discussing “tragedy of the commons” and ended on a similar topic. Every day when you step outside you can’t help but notice what you once took for granted--even singing birds-- and contemplate just how interconnected and interdependent the world really is. If you’ve read about the debates over the reintroduction and impact of grey wolves in Yellowstone, you’ll get a good deal of issue here, including the part you don’t hear about in the news. This course turned out to be one of the most practical TGC courses I’ve viewed. Cons? (1) The Guidebook was slim, with each lecture getting at best two pages of bare bones outline, and (2) too many references to what would be discussed later in upcoming lectures. Other than that, I was thoroughly delighted with this one.

Noticed fuzzy logic and a lot of fluffy language and disjointed presentation. I managed to get through all the lectures ,but think this course does more harm to the ecology movement than good!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Biased professor, but much solid content Sorry, but this professor is somewhat boring, vastly overuses "Y'know" (one of my pet hates!). There's plenty of strong valuable factual information and presentation of theory, but the lecturer gets bogged down often with biased opinion. I would far prefer a very objective presentation of facts without slanted interpretation, so that I may make up my own mind.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from "...You Know, This Professor Needs Help" In one way, this is one of the more difficult reviews for me to perform. Although Dr Strauss is extremely enthusiatic about his subject (and his knowledge is outstanding) I find it very difficult to listen to someone that uses the expression, "you know" about 15 to 25 times in each 30 minute lecture. I think this professor needs to watch videos of himself and notice just how irritating this habit can be. I feel like responding to each, "you know" with: "No, I don't know...that's why I ordered this course!" I also feel that the Teaching Company should have been more dilligent with this annoying habit during its' final editing of the course. I am appalled that nobody noticed this before allowing it to be published. Just to verify my suspicions, I kept a tally sheet for each lecture. Although Dr. Strauss used the expression in every single lecture, at one point he only used it eight times, with one lecture set a record with an incredible 27 times. I feel sorry for his live students that must endure this lecturing style. With all that being said, his material is very important and relevant today. Although it is obvious that Dr. Strauss is relying heavily on notes, and the teleprompter, his informaion is quite interesting and engaging. I did find it a little troublesome, in the fact that the color view of the teleprompter is visable in the reflection off of his eyeglasses. When he used visual aids, such as turtle shells, animal teeth, and related items, I found that this greatly enhanced his presentation. It is also interesting to note that he is not just a 'textbook ecologist.' He is an active researcher, and he often discussed some of his personal research that he and his team has performed, particularly in New England. I found this very interesting. When I was in college, I took a course on Conservation Ecology. It was one of the most enjoyable courses that I have ever taken, especially since I am not a Science major. I found myself reviewing a lot of the material that I learned in that course, as well as being able to bring my current knowledge up to the more 'modern' era. For example, I had no idea that the Earth exceded its' real carrying capacity about 20 years ago. When I took the college course, I remember discussing this, and our prof mentioned that, "well we don't have to worry about that for about another 50 to 100 years. But our human race, due to mis-use of resourses, insufficient conservation, and other factors, have managed to do just that! This is quite alarming. This is one of those subjects that all concerned persons should be knowlegable, both to keep our own habits in check, but also for educating others. Dr. Strauss' presentations of the mechanics of all this(ecosystems, water/carbon cycles, how all food chains are inter-connected) is good, but it did help me since I was already somewhat familiar with these topics. In closing, I think this may be one of the most valuable courses one could take, but, as other viewers have commented on, this professor needs help with this annoying speech habit (which greatly de-tracts in the message he is attempting to present) and, at times the course seems dis-junct and lacks coordination. Although it was issued in 2009, I feel that it is already showing its' age, due to some of these content flaws. I also found it odd that some of the key terms that the professor used in the lessons, such as: an aquifer, and a water-shed, were never defined in the guidebook. If TTC wants to keep this course in their catelog, (and I really feel they should) they should seriously consider completely re-doing, and re-organizing it from top to bottom. In the present format, I am afraid that it is too disjuct for most customers. (especially those not already familiar with the subject material)

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Needs Work This is a great topic and lots of great examples of ecology studies/papers. The professor loves his work but badly needs help organizing this lecture series. The lectures are dis-jointed, there is no logic to the organization and the examples repeat (and sometimes don't even relate). But, all in all, it is a great course because it is a timely, relevent topic.

Prof. Strauss is enthusiastic about his subject, and keeps all the lectures interesting. I particularly liked the examples drawn from recent research, which he interpreted for us at a level suitable for the non-specialist.

Eric Strauss has an easy manner and illustrates the material with plenty of practical real-life examples. I learnt a great deal from this course and would recommend it to anyone interested in the ecology of the Earth.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from This importance of the topic makes it a must-see This course fills a much needed gap in the Teaching Company repertoire. It covers quite a bit of territory in 36 lectures, so that really goes to show how much it was needed. It seems to give a good update on the current state of affairs in the field, quoting many authors, universities, and their papers. I think that is a feature that many other courses could also include. It also gives some good historical background in certain areas, thought I wish there would have been more of that. The professor is a young and lively sounding lecturer, so it seems as though he has made himself at home here, just like he is front of his undergraduate students in the classroom. That is, he can tend to be a bit informal, which is fine enough, but he can also repeat himself, whether using the phrase "you know" far too much, or repeating the same stories in different lectures. It's a pleasant enough delivery, which has to be the case in order to finish listening to all 36 lectures, can it also border on a talk-radio feel. That is, it might be good for listening in the car while commuting, but at home with your full concentration, might prove to be somewhat lacking. Overall, the topic of Earth's Ecology is so vitally important, that regardless of any shortcomings, it should be classified as a course that everyone should watch. We all need to become more aware of this subject, for ourselves and our future. This course is a great way to start that, or reintroduce yourself to it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Earth at the Crossroads Dr. Eric Strauss does a very good job of providing a diverse ecological perspective for someone seeking an elementary view of the topic. He provides significient citations and links to on-going research and studies. As an environmental science professor the program delivered what I was looking for and Dr. Strauss does an outstanding job of presenting the course. Worth the investment and I look forward to other courses by Dr. Strauss. The Teaching Company continues to produce excellent educational media for individuals seeking lifelong learning.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from INFORMATIVE, VALUABLE This is a breakthrough course for the Teaching Company in coverage on this topic. It is comprehensive and informative, and valuable in showing how one small variable can impact an entire eco-system. It also gives a detailed and understandable evaluation of how urbanization and human demographics are completely reshaping the ecological landscape. Particularly the effects of urban sprawl destroying habitats and changing mating habits and migratory patterns. The destructive effects of human predation are covered thoroughly. An important issue because it not only influences the survival of various species but how it changes the availability of human food supply, for instance - over fishing of cod. Most importantly, the professor diligently shows how modification in human habits and engineering can preserve eco-systems and even reverse some of the damage inflicted. Professor Strauss makes good use of graphics and is clearly in command of the material. I would have liked to have seen some more illustrations to reinforce some of the points. Sometimes the discursive lecture delivery needed further visual reinforcement. I gave a slightly lower grade - 4 instead of 5 because sometimes Professor Strauss gets jumping around on several topics at once, disrupting the narrative flow. He also has the very annoying habit of saying " You know." Maybe this is more a personal peeve, but I do not like professional lecturers using that phrase - that is - generally, we do not know, which is why we purchased the course, to be informed by an expert; which he clearly is. My other criticism deals with the outline. This was a highly technical, detailed course, which is fine, but the outline was woefully lacking in addressing a number of the terms and content. In fact, it was more of a sketch than an outline, and failed to include entire segments of lecture material. Nevertheless, the strengths vastly outweigh the defects, it is a very worthwhile and valuable course, and I strongly recommend it. Actually, instead of being locked into a 4 or 5, I would probably give it a 4.6.
