I live in Green Bay, WI, the same community where Dr. Aldrete teaches. I hope to bump into him sometime and congratulate him on an excellent course. This course was an absolute joy to view. The lectures are amusing and interesting, with a perfect mix of broad overviews and specific examples and excerpts. This was by far my favorite of the great courses.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Superb! (even if a bit unbalanced. . . ) This is an outstanding course in (almost) all respects. The subject matter is fascinating and important. Even with 48 lectures it is necessarily an overview, which would serve well as either an introduction to, or review of, ancient history. Other courses go into many of these areas in more depth. But anyone with an interest in history who is not already fully conversant with the pre-medieval world will find it engaging and very worthwhile. And I particularly appreciate the inclusion of material on culture - art, science, and religion - in addition to the usual story of politics and wars. As others have noted, there is a marked emphasis on Greek, Roman, and Chinese history, with significantly less on India, Africa, and the Americas. This is unfortunate, but perhaps not unexpected from a scholar whose own work is on ancient Greece and Rome. Professor Aldrete is a superb teacher. He is organized, focused, and knowledgeable, and he speaks in a relaxed, conversational tone with an appropriate level of energy and enthusiasm, just the right amount to maintain your attention. His final lecture provides an insightful argument for the relevance of ancient history to the "modern" world. Plus, he went to Princeton! I strongly recommend the video for the many helpful maps, photos, and other images. The Course Guidebook is particularly thorough and well done, and contains a detailed timeline and an extensive annotated bibliography. So - This course has my highest recommendation for any with an interest in human history and culture, as a very worthwhile introduction or review, with the understanding that all cultures are not covered in equal depth. Enjoy!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I binge watched this one… I am half-way through the 48 lectures, and I feel confident enough to be able to go ahead an say this in the top 5% of the 60plus Great Courses I have watched. I am a history buff, so I am biased towards history classes. But I believe anyone who has a boundless curiosity about history will really enjoy this one. The course is fairly unique in making an attempt to present Big History or a Global perspective of history. Other Big History-genre courses I have watched are not even in the same league with how good this one is. The professor is a little quirky, so be prepared for that, but to me he is fun and compelling to watch and listen to. He conversational tone, his presentation style, his body language make listening to him just fun, in my opinion. His passion and love of history comes across quite clearly. He obviously takes joy in history. 48 lectures allows the professor to really put some meat on the bones, to add some context, and some texture. At this point in the class I am already convinced this has been one of my better investments in a Teaching Company product. I will probably watch every video class that features Professor Aldrete. The bottom line - I would not hesitate to recommend this class to anyone interested in history

Aldrete’s “History of the Ancient World: A Global Perspective” stands out as having garnered unusually high praise. I loved the course and am delighted to be one of the approximately 95% of reviewers who recommends it. In addition to specifying particular strengths, I also want to comment on some faults that a few reviewers noted. Commendable characteristics include: *Dr. Aldrete’s infectious enthusiasm (He’s having fun!); *the momentum of the instructional narrative—each lecture and the entire course end all too quickly; *explanations of how physical geography affects cultural evolution; *comparisons, contrasts, and correlations among different civilizations (reminiscent of Dr. Robert Garland’s Great Course #3300 on Greece and Rome); *biographical sketches of historical figures that make me feel I know them better and understand their probable motivations better than I ever have before (e.g., Sima Qian, Hadrian, Charlemagne); *insightful discussion of widely separated but contemporaneous developments, pointing out parallels and universality; *instances wherein features of the modern world harken back to ancient innovations and patterns; *visual accompaniments more in sync with the professor’s words than is sometimes the case; *Dr. Aldrete’s willingness to share his own speculations and unifying theories, above and beyond what other modern historians hold, or what past historians held, to be true. Reviewers who have pointed out that Dr. Aldrete’s grammar, pronunciation, and elocution are occasionally imperfect are not wrong; however, I am so impressed by how much he makes me care about what I am learning that I am not perturbed about those other things. If he uses a teleprompter, it isn’t apparent; and his air of spontaneity is engaging. Whether or not his physical movements amount to distractions is a matter of opinion—I have no issue with his gestures. Some have said that the “brevity” of “only” 48 lectures on the vast subject tackled was a problem; well, even after 48, I would like more, too, but I still feel the course deserves a rating of across-the-board excellence. The critique most pertinent regarding instructional effectiveness is that the professor made some factual errors. I noticed two myself. The Mayan Empire actually extended into what is today “Western Honduras,” not “Eastern Honduras” as reported. Also, one could say that the description in Lecture 45 of the Abbasids as “Persian converts to Islam” is, at best, misleading. Many ethnic Persians did indeed help the Abbasids establish the Abbasid Arabic Caliphate and then were numerous among its subjects, but the Abbasid ethnic group itself claimed descent from Muhammad’s uncle Al-Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib. By the way, significant errors and mere slips could have been corrected post-production by voice overdubbing, as done in several other Great Courses I own. I once read an anonymous quotation: “The expert avoids all the little errors on his way to the big fallacy.” The quotation doesn’t fit ideally with what I am trying to express, but it does remind me that a flawless but dry history course might have achieved a “big letdown,” if not a “big fallacy;” namely, the letdown of leaving me informed but uninspired. Dr. Aldrete is an expert, too, but the sort who seems primarily driven to share “big understandings.” The stirring overview he has provided of a broad sweep of ancient history helps me understand many important concepts. His exuberance while presenting a course that seems to be less tightly scripted than others more formal is one reason I will remember plenty from his efforts. A 100% precisely speaking expert might not have taught me nearly as much. Feeling personally prompted to check other sources to look up information about the Mayans and the Abbasids, as well as to order more history courses, is a measure of positive aftereffects from studying with Dr. Aldrete.

He also put in some interesting comparisons between different cultural philosophers. Humans are humans the world over & similarities are as important as the differences. Well worth the time. This course would probably work as well in audio but the pictures & maps included were useful.

Professor Gregory Aldrete offers the following scenario...at 8am you purchase a chocolate and newspaper and pay in US currency. Bu doing so you are utilizing contributions from Egypt, China, India, the Muslim world, Greece, Rome, and Mesoamerica ! These lectures offer a breath not depth approach to ancient civilizations. This would be a great introduction to the various civilizations much like a survey course of Western Civilization taught in college. If an individual desires an more in depth examination of a particular subject ( e.g. Rome, Greece, Americas) then the Teaching Company certainly offers such specialized courses. Dr Aldrete himself also offers an excellent course on the Roman Republic. . Some highlights include: how Mesopotamia evolved from mud, how geography shapes national boundaries, Chinese developments independent of the West, military comparisons between China and Rome, and how Islam might have shaped Europe as we know it. Through 48 lectures, I was never bored with Dr Aldrede and his excellent "History of the Ancient World" .

Rated 3 out of 5 by from A good course badly in need of editing What appeals to me about this course is its comprehensiveness. Aldrete covers not just the familiar stories of Greece, Rome, and Israel, but also those of India, China, North and South America, and even Polynesia. As much as I revere my own Western heritage, how many more times can I hear about Alexander, Alcibiades, and Augustus without surfeiting? Getting exposed to Chandragupta and Shi Huangdi was just what the doctor ordered. Regrettably, this course 's strength also proves its undoing. Aldrete 's cramming the histories of so many civilizations into a mere 48 lectures yields some embarrassingly slapdash treatments of important events. For instance, in lecture 20, which covers Alexander 's defeat of Darius III at Gaugamela, Aldrete says that the fleeing Darius "just dies on the run." Oh? Several other courses by TTC/TGC clearly tell us that Darius 's own men assassinate him. In the same lecture, Aldrete calls Alexander 's burning of Persepolis an "unfortunate incident." Excuse me? "Unfortunate incident" so understates the case as to offend me. In burning Persepolis, Alexander 's army concomitantly destroyed a huge number of irreplaceable Zoroastrian texts. These texts are forever lost to us, which is far, far graver than an "unfortunate incident." One can also smell in these lectures the faint whiff of political correctness. In lecture 14, Aldrete says of Buddhism in India, "A little bit ironically, it fizzles out somewhat in the country of its birth." On hearing this, I laughed out loud. What actually happened is that Muslim invaders eradicated Buddhism from India by killing its practitioners and burning down its monasteries. Aldrete 's flip "it fizzles out somewhat in the country of its birth" exonerates Islamic crimes against Buddhism by covering them over. This is especially galling given that in lecture 36, Aldrete has no qualms about fingering the Catholic Conquistadors with the blame for destroying irreplaceable Mayan texts. It's even more surprising that TTC/TGC allowed this instance of ahistoricity to get past its editors. In the first edition of TTC/TGC 's "Great World Religions, " lecturer Diana Eck devoted a fair amount of space to the Muslims ' eradication of Buddhism from India. Aldrete 's faulty command of English is equally jarring. In lecture 16, he says of a Greek flotilla, "A storm sunk them." Why don't we change that to: "A storm SANK them"? In lecture 24, he says, "With the death of Alexander in 323 BC, the Hellenistic period begun." Um, can we have "BEGAN" instead? In the same lecture, he tells us that a serpent "murders " Laocoon and his sons. I'm sorry, Professor Aldrete, but murder can only be committed by moral agents. Unless you are ascribing moral agency to a serpent, then you should say that a serpent "kills" Laocoon and his sons. In Lecture 33, he confuses the terms "suborn" and "subordinate." These are only the most glaring of his mistakes. Even more cringe-inducing than Aldrete 's faulty grammar is TTC/TGC's turning his lectures into a Halloween party. Aldrete spends all of lecture 26 wearing a toga. He spends the entirety of another lecture ridiculously dressed like a hoplite. TTC/TGC 's lecturers come from the finest schools of Europe and North America; could the wardrobe department please dress them like the professionals that they are? Finally, why does Aldrete say "um" so frequently when he's obviously reading from a teleprompter? Is this something that the director told him to do to make himself sound as if he were NOT reading from a teleprompter? Did the director also instruct Aldrete to make so many frenetic, distracting gestures with his hands? This is bad stagecraft. In sum, "History of the Ancient World: A Global Perspective," though marvelously comprehensive in its scope, is a course badly marred by small (but glaringly noticeable) mistakes.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from OK-Not Perfect; Still Very Good Wow--a history of the entire world, from earliest records to roughly the "middle ages"--is that even possible? Will it be a dry recitation of names and dates and places? [The kind of history course everyone dreads]. I purchased this unsure if I would even like it or not. The major hurdle for historians, it seems to me, is presenting the past in a way that makes it become meaningful to the listener today. I say that Professor Aldrete succeeded here. No, it's probably not possible for any one historian to really be an expert on the entire history of the ancient world. Nor is it possible, and certainly not in "only" 8 discs, to cover every civilization, every dynasty, every important event. Therefore a course like this inevitably opens itself up to criticism, whether that be on occasional inaccuracies, subjects omitted, differing theories, or difficulties with pronunciations. I had never taken a course in "world history" before, except I think one somewhat dull and superficial one early in high school. I had studied particular pieces: the Roman Empire, some of the history of Islam, World War I, the American Civil War, the Vietnamese war, ancient Egypt, the British empire prior to World War I come to mind. But nothing with this span, either of time or of place. Dr. Aldrete did a great job, I thought, tackling the impossible. He certainly has a lot of enthusiasm for his task. Particular areas which were memorable and new for me included ancient China, the pre-Columbian Americas, and the ancient Mesopotamian area. If you think you may be interested and are not a strong student of ancient history, I believe you'll definitely find this interesting. From this overview, you can always focus on further histories that explore a more discrete area in greater depth.

There are a few courses in TGC I have heard that presume a similar perspective. “The big history of civilizations” also has a global perspective and covers all of the narrative histories of the world geographies. Contrary to this course however, it has a wider scope and covers all epochs of human civilization. Another course which has a similar focus is “Human prehistory and the first civilizations”. Though this course has its focus on prehistory – which this course does not – on top of early civilizations, which are in common for both course, the global perspective is the target for both courses. Finally, the wonderful course “Big history…” taught by Professor Christian also covers as its last complexity thresholds the rise of humanity from its prehistorical stages, to the early civilizations and the ancient world – continuing all the way up until today. My problem with this course is that it does not, in my opinion, focus nearly enough on providing the global perspective. It is much more focused on providing the narratives of how these ancient cultures rose and fell, their cultures, their art and so forth - but there is relatively little analytical discussion to compare the different civilizations that developed in some cases, totally in parallel one to the other without the mere knowledge of the other’s existence. So while it is true that all geographies are covered in the eras of the ancient world –the global perspective in the analytical sense is not nearly as developed as the title suggests. This is also where “Big history of civilizations…” failed in my opinion. Professor Fagan’s approach in “Human prehistory…” was much more analytical and anthropological, but was more focused on the prehistorical period and the very first civilizations. So, much of the content discussed here is temporally later. Only in the course “Big History…” did I find the analytical discussion satisfying in this respect. Having said this, Professor Aldrete is a wonderful teacher, and the course was fun to listen to. The problem is that the coverage, naturally, is very superficial since the scope is so huge. The only reason I decided to hear this course was to get the global perspective that was promised, and this was in my opinion not substantial enough. So overall though the course is taught by a great teacher, it can only provide a wide, superficial introduction to the ancient world. If one is already versed in this material, there is really not much new to find here.

I always felt my ancient history knowledge was spotty and was looking for a one stop shop to get the story. He definitely delivered. He focuses somewhat moreso on battle tactics than most sources, and perhaps he may not have the time to discuss all issues, but those are minor issues. I felt it was a great use of time and money.

This is by far the best history course I have ever taken, and Prof. Aldrete is probably one of the best history professors in the world. I would like to start this review by enumerating the many aspects that made it so great. The first thing I would like to talk about is Prof. Aldrete’s himself. I think there must not be many history professors in the world with his level of professionalism and dedication. He managed to create and engaging, in fact addictive course, that just kept you coming back for more, even better than a Netflix series. His approach was very smart; he conveys the key points of the course in an easy to understand format, in a way that you won’t forget long past the course has finished. He avoids all unnecessary minutia and focuses on what’s important, the lessons that can be learned from each historical period. Also, for the most part, Dr. Aldrete did not succumb to political correctness; for example he clearly admits that the civilizations of the Americas were in the stone age, way behind their European counterparts; he is not hostile to Christianity, like many modern scholars, and avoids the use of “Dark Ages” to designate Late Antiquity; he adheres to the Great Man theory of history; and he does not hesitate to acknowledge the great and positive cultural impact that Western heritage has had in the rest of the world, especially Roman And Greek culture. His declamatory style, precise changes in intonation and voice inflexions, camera angle changes and precise speech make the lectures a real pleasure to hear. I loved how he recited quotes from ancient authors to illustrate his points, it was really a great way to embellish the course. With all this to say, I must also mention that I was shocked by the final lecture. After such a precise and clever analysis of thousands of years of history, he ultimately came to the conclusion that the most decisive event to occur in all antiquity was the Muslim conquest of North Africa and the Middle East, and that Mohammed -and not Charlemagne- should be called the Father of Europe. My heart skipped a beat when I heard that. I can’t understand how he could arrive to such horrendous conclusions. But in the end, I forgive him because of the great value and effort he put in this course, and the great understanding I gained from ancient history after taking it. The course provided me with a great background from where to base more in-depth explorations of the past. Therefore, I do sincerely recommend this series. If you don’t like history, he will make you like it. If you already like history, he will make you like it even more.

I was not sure I would like it as much as Professor Aldrete’s other courses on decisive battles and military blunders, but it more than met my needs. I have a good grasp of ancient Greek and Roman history, but not what was happening elsewhere at the time. Professor Aldrete weaves all of this together into a fascinating whole, including not only the expected wars and conquests, but also the intellectual, cultural, religious, economic, and social developments. While the advance of civilizations is necessarily an urban story (encompassing perhaps ten to twenty percent of the ancient population), Professor Aldrete includes some representative hunter-gatherer groups, notably the Inuit and Australian Aborigines. Also, the New World is not slighted, with fine lectures on the Olmecs and the Mayas. His lectures speed along with fine and telling details and have, as he states early on, “…several broad themes [that] link many of the diverse and fascinating cultures…: First, take note of how the physical environment in which a culture develops affects how it evolves. Second, keep an eye out for instances when two civilizations meet, either because of peaceful migration or militant invasion. Often, key moments of change or transformation are sparked by such interactions. Third, watch for innovations or experiences that seem to occur across all civilizations. Finally, notice how much of our contemporary culture has its origins in antiquity, so that by the end of our trip through the ancient history of the world, you should have a better sense of how the world you live in today was formed.” (Course Guidebook, Page 7). So much is covered in the forty-eight lectures that it is difficult to do justice to the entire course. Nevertheless, I found three treatments to be especially interesting: Professor Aldrete’s extended and truly multifaceted comparison of the Roman Empire and the Han Dynasty of China; the campaigns of Chandragupta Maurya to unify India favorably compared to the near contemporary conquests of Alexander the Great; and how conditions in various societies contributed to the development of distinctive intellectual, philosophical, and religious traditions. One of the biggest take-aways from this course is the significance of geography/physical environment in the development of ancient societies. There are other related observations Professor Aldrete draws from relatively recent scholarship that especially enliven this course. Perhaps the most interesting for me is the explanation of why North and South American societies lagged Asia and Europe in development. Professor Aldrete proposes that it can be traced to their lack of large mammals suitable for domestication, specifically cows, sheep, goats, pigs, and horses. Moreover, Africa and New World societies lacked high yield grains. Such factors plausibly explain the unequal development in the ancient world. Toward the end of the course, I got a bit impatient as the story continued beyond what I considered ‘ancient’, moving into the 800s AD. Professor Aldrete does this, however, to show how the rise of Islam spelled the end of the Mediterranean-based ancient world: “The Islamic conquests separated what used to be one world into three separate worlds—Europe, Africa, and the Middle East—situated on three different continents. Each of these new worlds now turned their backs on the Mediterranean Sea” (Page 319). A stellar wrap-up to an excellent course. The course works well in audio format, though the video has many helpful illustrations/graphics, the most important being maps. The reason I know this is because, after finishing the audio on my daily walks, I signed up for the Great Courses Plus program and found the video version available. The video lectures I sampled are quite impressive. The 352-page course guidebook is excellent, with many pictures, fine lecture summaries, a helpful timeline, and annotated bibliography. Highly recommended!

I am finding it interesting and to be a good overview, a good foundation. However, I am disappointed the DVDs do not have closed captioning. I wanted to watch them with my husband whose hearing is impaired. We had gotten other courses with closed captioning and assumed this one would have them also, but it does not. I would recommend this course only if you do not need captions.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Top 1% of All History Courses You'll Take I bought this course after "striking out" with the courses "The Foundations of Western Civilization" and "Great Ancient Civilizations of Asia Minor" (i.e. I was extremely interested in learning about the time period and civilizations covered but was disappointed by the professors' teaching styles, wasn't engaged, and didn't take much from the courses). This course was nearly perfect in exceeding all of my expectations going in. This is a legitimate 5 star course that meets all of my criteria for such a designation: 1- The professor was easy to understand and listen to while at the same time prompting engaging discussions that led to me learning alot more than I knew going in. 2- The 24 hours of 48 lectures flew by. I would look at my phone and find out I had listened for large periods of time without even checking the remaining time or lecture number I was on. This is a rare experience even for the great ones I've listened to. 3- When the course concluded I was yearning for more and I scrambled to see if the professor taught any other courses. I was left wishing there would be a lecture 49 in which he would cover the next great civilization and just go on and on to the present time. It has excellent historical narrative covering the following civilizations from aprx. 3500 BC-800 AD: o Mesopotamia (Sumerians, Akkadians, Hittites, Babylon, Assyria, Chaldean/Neo-Babylonians, Persians) o Ancient Egypt o Ancient India (Lost civilization of the Indus Valley & the Vedics) o Pre-Greek: Minoan and Mycenaean o Ancient Greece o China (Shang, Zhou, Qin, Han, Sui, and Tong) o Macedonians o Ancient Rome o Early Mesoamerica (Olmecs and Mayans) o Early South America (Chavin, Moche and Teotihuacán) o Aborigines of Australia o Polynesians o Byzantine o Early Christianity o Early Islam (the Umayyad & Abbasid caliphates) o Franks (under Charlemagne) o Mentioned but not discussed in great detail: Carthage, Sassanians, and African empires Axum, Ghana, and Mali The professor is a clear speaker with a good pace (does not rush things nor uses lofty language). This is such a breath of fresh air in contrast with other professors I've listened to. Professor Aldrete is the model by which all history professors should be held to. This course was great right up to the end. Lecture 48 has an interesting take on why Europe would rise and supplant the Islamic and Chinese empires in the centuries following 800 AD (when at the time it would’ve seemed highly unlikely) and attempts to explain the origin of when Africa, Asia, and Europe split into regions of distinct linguistic, religious, and cultural differences. I read a negative review that mentioned the course was too simplistic and I can see how some indiviudals may consider the professor's style as such but I think the mark of a good historian and teacher is one who can teach in a straight-forward, easy to understand manner, and keep you entertained while not stretching the facts of history to fit into a certain "story". A course covering such a breadth of time, land, and civilizations must leave some things out but I found it somewhat curious these were ommitted: 1- How does a lecture on Greek theatre not include even a quick mention of Oedipus? 2- Would've liked a little more coverage of the end phase of the Peloponnesian War including Sparta's final victory over Athens 3- While Julius Caesar, Pompey, Marc Antony and Octavisus Caesar were discussed, there was no mention of the two Roman triumvirates that I could recall 4- While the professor did reference specific years when discussing a specific civilization or dynasty, it would’ve been good if he mentioned the contemporary dynasties that were ruling in other parts of the world to give some global perspective; For example when discussing a dynasty ruling in China, mention it was the same time as when the X civilization was dominant in the Mediterranean or the X dynasty was ruling the Roman Empire Yes, these four items border on nitpicking when considering the success of this course. I highly recommend this course to anyone interested in the rise of the world's earliest civilizations across the globe. Please bring back Professor Aldrete for another course preferably on medieval Europe focusing on the formation of current states like France, Spain, Portugal, Netherlands, etc. I know there are some courses on 1600 Europe onward but I'd be interested in a course on political history of the major countries prior to that time period.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from History has to be seen as a "Moving Target" Prof. Gregory S. Aldrete presents a rather fascinating look at "Ancient History" as it was known at the time. He mentions as sources of information some of the same sources I have used and found useful. While I own the DVDs, I turn almost all my GCs into mp3's for ease of listening in my own systems at my own leisure. I found his visual presentation to fine and interesting. I found his look at MesoAmerica to be somewhat outdated and a bit off the mark. It has to be understood at this point that history is based on current lnowledge and archaeological finds and a lot of new material has been "unearthed" since he put this course together. No matter when you put your "finger down" on history, there is always more coming to light so it is unsurprising that he cannot have included materials that may not have been found yet. In this case, I refer to the findings in modern Peru at the area known as "Norte Chico" which seems to indicate advanced civilization dating back to 5,000 BCE (& before) which, in poulation size and density may rival the size of Sumer. Also relatively recent findings in Amazon Basin by Anna Roosevelt seem to indicate advanced civilization in and around 6,000 BCE. I am pleased that I bought this Course and there is a lot of fascinating information included. Particularly I liked the opening lecture where he described just how far off a researcher or archaeologist can be as they look at "finds" through their own particular social and cultural "lens" ... his particular example is where Olive Oil Presses were misinterpreted as Ceremonial Altars by well known and respected researchers. A lot of history is opinion and conjecture and this must be kept in mind but this course can give you a very fine understanding of our current understanding of "Ancient History".

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Pretty much perfect If you’re interested in history, especially in Ancient History – and how it connects to, and continues to shape, the modern world, the world we know, then definitely get it. And watch it and re-watch it. My wife and I – we are from Prague, Czech Republic, by the way, so this review is not US-centric at all – have been watching at least 2 lectures every day. We’ve just finished it. Big ideas, engaging presentation, apposite anecdotes and examples, all from a lecturer who is clearly passionate and knowledgeable about his subject and loves to tell the world about it. We are definitely going to watch this again to absorb more of it. Five-star material all around.

The lecturer is very distracting as he moves from side to side of the set for no apparent reason (other than that someone told him to keep moving). We're only two lessons into the series, and just 'on the bubble' about sending it back - we keep hoping he'll get better, but it doesn't look promising... Courses on The Impressionists and British Literature wer both quite good.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Superficial! In this series of 48 lectures, Professor Gregory Aldrete endeavours to cover human history from the invention of agriculture to the year 1000. He covers not only Europe, Asia and Africa but also pre-Columbian America. Of course, the course’s wide scope prevents any deep discussion. In addition, Professor apparently regularly gives lectures on cruise ships. The result is that this course is definitely below university level: • the approach is mainstream and never critical nor innovative; indeed it is often simplistic and narrative with for instance an adventurous Mesopotamian suddenly walking towards the Zagros Mountains to discover new horizons; • subsistence farming is seen as a dismal activity with no religion or celebrations of weddings, births or harvests; • Michelangelo is identified as “a famous sculptor”, Plato “a famous philosopher”; • strange similes are suggested as between the Peloponnesian War and the Cold War or Gupta and Alexander the Great. Professor Aldrete speaks in a lively, engaging tone. Some listeners, however, may be surprised by his mispronunciation of certain names (Lord ‘Eljin’ for Lord Elgin, for instance) or by his longish pauses that make one question if something is wrong with his or her listening device. Overall, this course is geared towards a public that is either very young or totally ignorant of the topic.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Overview of the History of the Ancient W This course provides an excellent overview of the history of the ancient world on a truly global basis. Professor Aldrete includes discussion of the ancient history for the Mediterranean, the Middle East, India, China, Oceania, Africa, North America, and South America. Professor Aldrete also describes some of the interactions that occurred between these ancient states such as between the Mediterranean based states and the Middle East based states. The timeline that is provided in the Course Guidebook and shown on the section during various lecture is very helpful to keep track of when this specific history and also to see what other ancient civilizations exist in that same time period. Both Han Dynasty in China and Roman Empire in the Mediterranean occurred at approximately the same time and Professor Aldrete comparing and contrasting many aspects of these two civilizations including geography, cultural, religion, wars, and government. As I mentioned above, this course is only an overview of the history of the ancient world. For example, Professor Aldrete only have time to discuss the Peloponnesian War in one lecture; whereas, The Great Courses offers an excellent 36 lecture course from Professor Harl on just the Peloponnesian War. The Great Courses has many other excellent courses to provide additional details on various aspects of ancient history including a couple of additional wonderful courses from Professor Aldrete on decisive wars and military blunders. I highly recommend this course for anybody who is interested in ancient history for both its great content and for a tool to help you discuss which more detailed course on ancient history that may be of interest.
