Course Overview

The number one problem facing many high-school students: They haven't been taught how to learn. Because our current educational system focuses on test results, on making sure students memorize the facts and material needed to pass standardized tests, few students are deliberately taught about learning—about developing the particular mind-set and using the specific skills that can help them graduate with exemplary grades and an exemplary mind.

In fact, learning is a skill that your student can easily make a part of his or her everyday life and use as a powerful tool for success, both inside and outside the classroom. All it takes is a mastery of research-proven strategies, including

  • recognizing one's learning style, and tapping into its specific strengths;
  • taking notes effectively to avoid missing out on what's being covered in class;
  • knowing how to organize and prioritize homework and class projects;
  • solving problems with creativity and critical thinking; and
  • approaching tests with focus, thorough preparation, and confidence.

Professor Michael Geisen, the 2008 National Teacher of the Year, has spent his teaching career showing thousands of students these and other skills. And with How to Become a SuperStar Student, 2nd Edition, he can give your own student the same vital skills that will carry him or her through high school, college, and well into the challenges of adult life. This highly engaging 12-lecture course is a commonsense guide to learning, one that addresses the areas that students have the most difficulty with—and that parents show the most concern about. Packed with advice, tips, tricks, and resources, this masterfully updated version of our highly popular study guide course has the power to transform your student's education into a world-class learning experience.

A Ready Aid Designed for Any Student

Professor Geisen believes that success in school is about being a strong learner. He's designed How to Become a SuperStar Student, 2nd Edition to be a powerful reference tool for your student, whether he or she is

  • struggling in a particular subject area and looking for a new way to approach it,
  • getting by in class but looking for the boost that will turn him or her into an outstanding student, or
  • making the grade already and seeking to strengthen his or her competitive edge.

Professor Geisen knows the problems and pitfalls that can often leave students discouraged about school. Most important: He knows exactly how to counteract that discouragement and make learning not just worthwhile but fun. The course features whimsical animations, detailed demonstrations, and moments of humor—all designed to help capture your student's attention and emphasize the joy to be found in learning.

Plus—A Bonus Disc Designed Just for Parents

Every copy of How to Become a SuperStar Student, 2nd Edition comes with an additional six lectures, which Professor Geisen has designed specifically for the parents of middle- and high-school students. This Parents' Guide covers concepts and tips backed up by academic research, years of teaching experience, and input from other teachers, parents, and students. These include

  • how to help your student with his or her homework,
  • how to effectively communicate your student's needs to teachers,
  • how to prepare your student for college and the future, and
  • how to raise your student with balance, confidence, and humility.

"You're the person who knows your child best," Professor Geisen—a parent himself—remarks at the start of these additional lectures. "Therefore, you need to be an integral part of the process."

And you can start by giving your student the keys to success in learning with How to Become a SuperStar Student, 2nd Edition. Filled with all the best practices students who want to win need to know, these lectures will forever change the way your student, and even you, think about education.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Learn how to learn more effectively! I find it hard to fault this course. It was purchased primarily for the benefit of my children aged 12 and 14 whom are homeschooled, to ensure there were no fundamental deficiencies in their abilities to process, analyse, remember, and utilise their educational materials. The whole family watched the entire series of lectures and we were not disappointed. Michael Giesen dealt quite succinctly with a wide range of educational issues confronting students, teachers, and parents, and went to some lengths to ensure that these three groups were able to understand one another and effectively coordinate their efforts toward the same ends of the best possible outcome for (primarily) the student. He addressed differing learning styles, how learning actually happens, student attitude, study techniques, time management, exam preparation, desirable outcomes of education, identifying strengths and weaknesses, and much more (including several lectures specifically for parents). I am confident there was nothing of substance left out, and the material covered was always well structured, easy to follow, and unambiguous. As I always carefully read many reviews myself before purchasing a course, there was one aspect of several reviews which gave me some reservations before purchasing, and this was the references to Giesen’s more casual delivery style. Some reviewers seem to have taken exception to his ‘self-promotion’ and quirky asides. I thought his delivery was very well suited for the target demographic, i.e. teenagers, and quite entertaining for the adult viewers, and think that those who have criticised him in this respect may be suffering either from a deficit in their sense of humour or a surplus of self-importance. The material covered in this course is indeed crucial for secondary students. Many may already know some or even much of it, but I highly doubt any would know it all, and in any case a well-structured refresher such as this can do no harm. One major caveat: this course would benefit only those who are actually keen to be educated. It supplies strategies and systems for improving the efficacy of one’s education, but those who lack self-motivation with regard to their own education will not find this course to be a magic bullet. Highly recommend to teenage or older students who wish to make the most of their learning, whether self-directed or within a formal educational system.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from From the bleachers to the field Why would I, a teacher of adults, want to view a course on How to Become a SuperStar Student? Simply because I feel it necessary to understand the people at the desks. How do they learn? What do they need to succeed? As busy adults, how can I help them to quickly understand the difficulties of a software program. An adjunct at a local community college, I am one of many parts in a classroom. Teaching adults the many features of Office 365 software is challenging. The programs are constantly adding or improving features. The basics, though, remain the same and are used everyone. I strive to teach the basics and then move on to more involved tasks. Enter this course - How to Become a SuperStar Student. Michael is good. He combines humor, insight, and knowledge to the subject of learning. Knowing how a student can become a "superstar" helps me, an instructor, to more effectively teach. Being reminded of the different types of intelligence, critical thinking, and time management skills all contribute to making the connection between me and my students. Sometimes we need to move from the bleachers to the field. Doing so helps us understand how the game is played. This course is helping me to see the experience of learning from the view of the people at the desks. It will help you to do the same.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great tool for Study Skills Kids are learning how to learn. It gives detailed information from how one learns to how to study, do research and reports. I would recommend this for every student. Just one picture of a woman in a bikini is NOT appropiate.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Super help! This course, and instructor, have inspired my son since middle school. He watches it frequently to get advice and encouragement. My son struggles with focus and attention, but has gained some handy ideas for organizing and approaching his most challenging subjects. Well worth the purchase - an investment in his educational future! I also frequently hear Mr. Geisen's wit repeated throughout the day ;-)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from how to be a super star student 2 i gave an overall rating of 4 because I am going by hearsay info. I bought this course for my 12yr old, 7th grade Grandson. I called my daughter to inquire on Grandboy's progress approximately one month of them obtaining the CD/DVD/ROM. She said he is doing alright but can do more. Then my grandson called me to share that he is getting As & Bs in Science and Math respectively. He is super intelligent anyway so I don't know if it is this program or the promise of the latest video game console. Maybe a little bit of both. I do know I am the happiest Grand Dad on the planet. Thank You!
