Course Overview

Have you ever wondered why your neighbors painted their front door lime green? Or wished you could watch TV without reaching for those snacks over and over again? Have you ever walked up and down the toy aisles to find a birthday present and left without buying anything, just to stop at the convenience store on the way home and buy the only toy on the shelf?

Those three activities—choosing a paint color, changing a habit, and purchasing a gift—might seem unrelated at first glance. But all are examples of the fascinating process of human decision making. Thousands of times each day, even tens of thousands by some estimates, we are presented with choices that require a decision. From the mundane to the life-changing, our brains are constantly working to solve these decision puzzles.

How in the world do we do it?

Over millennia, philosophers, theologians, and mathematicians have all weighed in on the topic, and in recent centuries, economists, psychologists, and sociologists have joined the investigation. People have always been fascinated by how the mind works. We also have a desire to learn from our mistakes, but in order to do so, it’s important to understand how we came to the decision that led to those mistakes.

From the Trojans’ acceptance of that big wooden horse, to the factors that help us decide whom to trust and whom to disbelieve, to the food you are likely to purchase in the market tomorrow—someone somewhere has put forth a theory to explain the decision. Some of these past theories could most politely be described as “aspirational,” describing decision making as it should be, not as it often is. Others have caught on in the minds of the general public and even been published in the popular press, only to be later disproven. But the information presented in this course is different.

In How You Decide: The Science of Human Decision Making, Professor Ryan Hamilton, Associate Professor of Marketing at Emory University’s Goizueta Business School, uses research revealed via the scientific method to understand and explain human decision making. While his easygoing manner and anecdotes about surprising and bizarre choices will keep you enthralled, Professor Hamilton also shares what decision science has revealed through empirically tested theories that make falsifiable predictions and lead to testable hypotheses.

Using the manufacturing process as a metaphor to present those truths, Professor Hamilton describes in 24 in-depth lectures:

  • the informational raw materials you use as inputs to the decision-making process

The Rut of Routines: Everyday Scenarios

Everyone has routines that are established over weeks, months, or even years. These routines become such a part of your life that they can obscure the fact that you’re actually making choices throughout the routine. For example, you go to the store to buy a bag of your favorite coffee. You’ve been drinking this coffee for so many years that you don’t even consider the purchase a “decision.” But when you arrive, you find that the store manager has rearranged the shelves and added five new brands plus six new flavors of your favorite brand. You pick up each new bag, read the label, and sniff the aroma. But you just can’t seem to decide what to buy. What’s happening here?

In this course, you’ll learn:

  • how the number and placement of choices affect your decisions and can even keep you from making any decision at all
  • how the memory of a song or a joke can cause you to make specific choices months or years later
  • whether or not subliminal messages can cause you to make decisions against your will
  • how the blood flow in your brain can be altered by advertising without any conscious thought on your part
  • how heuristics, while often helpful, can sometimes lead to stereotyping and other poor decisions.


You’ll also discover how you can affect your cognitive machinery and the decisions of others. For example, say that for years, you paid your children to do chores around the house. Over time, you watched them learn to make their beds, do their own laundry, mow the yard, and even do the dusting. But when you visited them in their first apartments, you were shocked to see that they were filthy. How could they possibly have made a decision like that? What went “wrong?” You’ll investigate:

  • the difference between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation
  • how reason-based decision making that seems rational can lead us astray
  • the power of partitioning to affect your own decisions and others’

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Decision to Buy this Course I was looking for a course in how to make good decisions, the parameters to consider, the pros and cons of each choice, the benefits and risks. Dr. Hamilton's course, to me, is essentially a graduate level discussion of the human brain's processes when confronted with making a decision. His examples are very good, but much time is spent on how psychology affects our decisions. He gives many references to studies that have been done, who the audience was, and why particular outcomes resulted the way they did. We have not completed the lessons yet, but I do not believe this is the right course for what we were looking for. The speaker Dr. Ryan Hamilton delivers the material in a clear manner, is easy to understand, and would appeal to many customers who order this course. One point to make to TGC staff: too many courses use the 2-camera technique which forces the lecturer to pace left and right while presenting the subject matter. This can be distracting, using just one camera would avoid this.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Completely Fascinating and Beautifully Taught! Why are there only 16 reviews??? - People, take this course! My full title for this review, had there been enough room, would have been "Completely Fascinating, Beautifully Taught, and Important for All!" And I mean it. I will not rehearse the course contents - do read through the details in the full description. The topics covered apply to all of us, everyday, and are often important and sometimes essential in determining our choices and our life's course. We like to think of ourselves as rational animals, but an enormity of recent psychological research has pretty definitively laid that conceit to rest, and it is this research, in all its fascinating variety and sometimes mind-bending conclusions, that make up "How You Decide." (Our professor very nicely gives credit to many of these researchers, particularly to the two giants who pretty much got the field going, Amos Tversky and Daniel Kahneman. I have to admit I have been trying to get through Kahneman's "Thinking, Fast and Slow" for some time. It's brilliant but dense. This course is a lot more fun.) And - Professor Hamilton is one of the finest teachers I have encountered anywhere. He speaks simply yet eloquently in a well-modulated, conversational voice which is a pleasure to listen to. He actually doesn't sound as if he is reading, but the excellent organization and clarity of his material make this pretty nigh impossible. And there are (almost) no irrelevant digressions. Further, our professor's breadth of knowledge and his ability to convey that knowledge with enthusiasm (but not too much enthusiasm!) adds to the listener's ability to stay attentive and to learn. And I appreciated the brief but focused summaries at the close of each lecture. The only negative I can think of is that I could occasionally imagine a rational explanation for phenomena which the researchers consider irrational, and I wish those points had been brought up and discussed. Just one small example: If a product was sold with a free but useless "bonus", such as a commemorative plate with the name of the company on it, it actually lost market share compared to the same product without the plate. This seems irrational: Why would you not purchase the exact same product when you get something free, even if useless, in addition? But I think this might be explained if the consumer is thereby led to believe that the product is not doing well, possibly because of poor quality relative to the competition. Why else might the company feel the need to add the freebie? I wish that more potentially rational alternative explanations such as this had been addressed. But this is truly a small point. I enjoyed the video, but the course could, I think, be equally well appreciated in the audio format. And the Course Guidebook is well done and complete. So - an outstanding course. Fascinating, remarkably well-taught, and very worthwhile for everyone. Really! Being aware of this material might actually help us act more rationally (and resist marketers!). - My highest recommendation for all.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Meh The fact that I'm bored is probably my own fault for picking this course, which seems to deliver what it promises. It's a scientific recounting of theories and studies about how people decide, but despite the teacher's enthusiastic delivery, I'm finding the material generally dull. I'm about halfway through, and have had to push myself to get this far though the course. Probably my own fault for picking this class, as I tend to prefer courses with a more emotional punch, something I can use in everyday life, such as the compelling "Outsmart Yourself: Brain-Based Strategies to a Better You" which discusses how to make better choices. However, that said, if you like the scientific aspects of psychology, you may well enjoy this course.
