Marine life is even more otherworldly and fantastical than we ever imagined, and Life in the World’s Oceans brings you face to face with these exciting creatures. Phytoplankton: Carrying the Weight of Ocean Life—and Us

Professor Todd starts your ocean journey at the very beginning, with the wonders of water and a fascinating look at the specific properties that make this unique molecule the essential ingredient for life. You’ll learn how life itself was ignited in this environment, eventually evolving into the phytoplankton that help keep us alive today, providing about 50 percent of all atmospheric oxygen. This phytoplankton—primarily free-floating, photosynthetic, and microscopic algae; and protists and prokaryotes—is the base of almost every marine food web. In fact, the largest animal ever known to have existed on earth, the 200-ton blue whale, sustains itself throughout an 80- to 90-year lifespan by eating only krill, which itself feeds directly on phytoplankton. With each blue whale requiring four tons of krill per day, it’s easy to see the critical link between a healthy phytoplankton population and whale viability.

Professor Todd also explains how research with new technology has recently reversed more than one common “truth” about marine life. DNA analysis has revealed new relationships between lifeforms and resulted in major taxonomic changes. And high-tech submersibles have allowed biologists to explore the deepest ocean floor, revealing a pathway to life in the absence of sunlight. Only recently have scientists learned that bacteria and other organisms use the hot, metal-rich fluids released by hydrothermal vents to turn chemical energy into food. That energy then fuels species of snails, shrimp, giant tube worms, and others that have evolved to thrive in these aphotic ecosystems.

And if snails, shrimp, and giant tube worms are not enough to peak your interest, the unforgettably dramatic images provided through this course give you access into the depths of the oceans, grant you up-close-and-personal encounters with charming marine mammals, and allow insights into the exhibits of Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History that you wouldn’t get without being there—from the fossils of red alga to the giant skeleton of a Basilosaurus in the Sant Ocean Hall.

Those Charismatic Marine Mammals

Life in the World’s Oceans provides a fascinating view into the complex lives of marine mammals, enhanced by stunning visual resources from the Smithsonian. Professor Todd shares his own exciting research and field experience with marine mammals to help respond to the most commonly asked questions about their intelligence.

In this course, you’ll learn that:

  • Some marine mammals use tools. Sea otters and one population of bottlenose dolphins, for example, use rocks and sponges, respectively, to acquire food while protecting their skin.
  • Some groups of humpback whales exhibit a feeding method that is not genetic, but is a learned, cultural behavior. Known as bubble-net feeding, it requires planning, cooperation, and communication among groups of these usually solitary animals.
  • In their attempt to attract a mate, humpback whales compose lengthy songs and transmit them across the entire population of breeding males for that region. And as the song slowly morphs over the course of the season, all the males adopt those changes, presumably learning from each other.
  • In the 1980s, a researcher noticed a humpback whale in the Gulf of Maine exhibiting a feeding behavior never recorded and named it lobtail feeding. Within ten years, the percentage of humpbacks seen using this technique went from zero to 50 percent, clear evidence of cultural transmission between individuals.
  • Bottlenose dolphins, orcas, and false killer whales appear capable of recognizing their image in a mirror. This is an extremely rare ability among animals, and indicates that some marine mammals could be “self-aware.”

Based on these observations and additional exciting research, you’ll learn exactly why Professor Todd concludes that these magnificent animals are indeed intelligent, communicative, and “accomplished” in their own environment to meet their own needs.

The Future of the Oceans

Given the size of the ocean, it’s understandable that humans believed it would be an inexhaustible resource, capable of diluting anything we threw its way. As Professor Todd leads you through the underwater wonders, he also focuses on the history and evolution of the vast entity. You’ll learn how the industrial revolution brought new, unforeseen technologies that possessed the ability to severely impact our environment. Climate change, acidification, and overfishing affect marine populations around the globe. During a relatively short period of time, we “fished” various sea life almost to extinction in the northern Atlantic, including the right whale, California sardines, several species of tuna, Chilean sea bass, and many more. As Professor Todd introduces you to various types of marine life, he also shares which ones are still facing great risks. Even today, many species of albatross, sharks, and sea turtles are in danger of becoming nonexistent.

One of the most important lessons Professor Todd shares in Life in the World’s Oceans is why it’s so important to consider the ocean environment as an entire system. Professor Todd’s passion for preserving the precious resource of the world’s oceans—and the diversity of life within them—is another area where the educational mission and research aims of the Smithsonian were a perfect match.     Are you afraid of sharks? Fish certainly have good reason to fear these top-of-their-game predators with their multiple rows of teeth, extraordinary sensitivity to smell, taste, and vibration, and ability to detect electrical current better than any other animal. But while four species have been known to assault humans with no provocation, almost 99 percent of the many hundred shark species would rather swim away from us than attack. x

    Marine Reptiles and Birds
    While the reptilian evolution of the amniotic egg allowed animals to move completely from the sea onto land, some reptiles retained strong marine ties. These include sea turtles and sea birds whose wide variety of adaptations allow for drinking saltwater, remaining underwater for long periods, and flying great distances using very little energy. But wait . . . did we just classify sea birds as reptiles? x

    Marine mammals did not evolve from marine species. Rather, they evolved from land mammals who found a plethora of “suddenly” open ecological niches when the dinosaurs became extinct about 65 million years ago. Today’s marine mammals might resemble each other because convergent evolution has led to similar adaptation. But best as scientists can tell, they have five separate lineages and no single common ancestor. x

    If you’ve ever jumped into frigid water, you quickly realize humans are definitely not adapted to life in the sea. What are we missing? In a word, it’s blubber—the thick layer of fat just beneath the skin of almost every marine mammal. In fact, blubber is such a successful insulator that marine mammals have evolved internal and external means for getting rid of all that heat, possibly even including planetary migrations. x

    For all practical purposes, terrestrial mammals live on a plane. Marine mammals, on the other hand, navigate a more viscous, three-dimensional environment with all its opportunities and challenges. We understand their propulsion mechanisms fairly well.     Not surprisingly, deep-diving marine mammals have evolved a physiology very different than our own. Adaptations including those related to blood chemistry, the location of stored oxygen, a variable heart rate, and articulated rib cages support the ability to go deep and stay long. But what about rising back up to the surface? How do they avoid getting “the bends”—or do they? x

    The Importance of Sound to Ocean Life
    Sound travels much better in water than in air. In fact, low-frequency waves, such as those produced by certain whales, can travel through water uninterrupted for hundreds or even thousands of kilometers, allowing the animals to be “in touch” with their group over vast distances. Other marine mammals produce and hear sounds at high frequencies perfect for echolocation. But what happens when human-generated sound gets in the way? x

    Food and Foraging among Marine Mammals
    Trophic patterns are complex cycling webs, often difficult to completely decipher. But two things are clear: Almost all marine food webs are based on microscopic photosynthesizers, and only a small fraction of the energy available at any trophic level becomes available to the next level. Adaptations such as baleen, ventral pleats, and unique tooth morphology allows these large animals to meet their energy needs. x

    Marine Mammal Interactions with Fisheries
    With plastic and nylon lines and nets becoming common in the last century, by-catch became an even greater problem for the marine mammals. When the media picked up the story in the mid-1960s, the public became engaged, and the Marine Mammal Protection Act was passed in 1972. But whale entanglement remains a problem, and some argue that even whaling was far less cruel. x

    Breeding and Reproduction in a Large Ocean
    Semi-aquatic marine mammals exhibit behaviors quite different than those who live fully in the water. In the former, an entire female community in one geographic area can come into estrus simultaneously and needs relatively few males—the strongest and “sneakiest”—to reproduce. In the latter, reproduction appears to be one of the driving forces of whale songs that can be heard over thousands of kilometers. x

    Behavior and Sociality in Marine Mammals
    From individual whales that corral their confused prey to highly coordinated bubble-net feeding and aunts who “babysit,” marine mammals have developed an extraordinary variety of social and hunting behaviors—each with its own “cost/benefit analysis” developed over millions of years. If the energy expenditure does not support the goal of passing on genetic material, natural selection will eventually drop the adaptation. x

    With sixty million years of evolution on their side, marine mammals have adapted to the widest possible variety of marine ecological niches.     Over and over, humans have behaved as if a given resource were inexhaustible. Rated 4 out of 5 by from Subject Matter and Presentation Expertise I purchased the .mp4 video series in early 2019. I'm writing this review after only completing about 75% of the course and will definitely finish all 30 lectures. Professor Todd is clearly knowledgeable in his field, and his presentations are excellent. The audiovisuals are well done. About 15% of the course consists of general topics, while 50% of the course is focused on marine mammals, concentrating mostly on whales. Marine mammals in general and whales in particular are clearly Professor Todd's area of greatest interest and expertise, and it's the course's greatest strength. It's also the course's principal weakness. For instance, one would not expect to purchase a 30-lecture series on "Botany" and discover that it is mostly about trees, and principally about deciduous trees, as wonderful as those are. Broader coverage of "Life in the World's Oceans" would likely have earned a 5-star rating from me.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Marine Life Lite Professor Todd's set of lectures provide a serious survey of some of the important aspects of marine life. There are discussions of basic chemical and biological facts that serve as background for understanding marine life. These are not to be confused with 'Discovery Channel-like' glitz that often glosses over the sometimes less entertaining topics such as water chemistry, photosynthesis and ocean currents and tides. Necessarily, I suppose, details about some aspects are not discussed...and so it is with survey courses. As a one-time practicing exploration geologist, I became adept at interpreting depositional environments through the recognition of fossils and ichnofossils (trace fossils). Many, if not all, interpretations relied of invertebrate fossils. I was, therefore, somewhat disappointed in the scant information relegated to those spineless creatures in these lectures. Maybe a future course... Notwithstanding these minor criticisms, I enjoyed these lectures, often repeating them for clarification...the guidebook was very helpful in that regard. As others have noted, the emphasis is clearly on marine mammals...whales and pinnipeds mostly...and why not? Having swum with the (seemingly) playful sea lions in the Galapagos Islands and watched elephant seals spar along coastal California, learning more about these fascinating creatures was a joy. Even if the staging of the lectures was a bit hokey and some messages a little preachy, Dr Todd's presentation was solid and well worth your time. Wait for low tide, low prices and full sale mode...this one is recommended.

What I don't appreciate is Great Courses' overblown, overlong intro to each and every lecture, forcing one to watch it repeatedly. It would hve been OK if used once at the first lecture introduction.

Information could be conveyed in simpler terms without dumbing down the content. More description, pictures, would be welcome. Hand flapping distracting. Otherwise, very informative. Good that he addresses legal/ethical issues as well.

Although there is quite a bit of lecture, there are probably thousands of pictures and film clips that illustrate what the lecturer is saying. He does not just cover the spectacular whales, but systematically covers all ocean life from plankton to whales. Perhaps there is a bit of overemphasis on whales at the expense of sharks and other familiar species like salmon, cod, tuna, etc. At the end there is some preaching about conservation that gets a bit heavy, but it is justified. And one can understand that once one has experienced the course.

It takes a little while to adjust to the professor's accent but he is lively and enthusiastic. Technically, there are some sections of the videos that are jerky but the audio is on a different track and is not affected. Also the guidebook would really benefit from a glossary.

The lecturer's admirable passion nevertheless occludes his judgment on the larger issues. This is most evident in the discussion of global warming in Lecture 30, where the lecturer offers as "fact" the hoax hockey stick chart concocted by the discredited Michael Mann.

Some reviewers have objected that there is too much on marine mammals and in that regard the course title is misleading. But all the content is very good and I especially liked how well Sean Todd integrated topics in marine mammals into bigger biological concepts (ecology, evolution, etc.). That said, I'm disappointed that The Great Courses evidently does a poor job proofing their support materials. There are frequent errors in the guide book and A/V imagery. An arthropod is identified as a round worm, a gull as a shearwater, a dead dolphin is shown as a subject for a biopsy, etc. (there's more). None of this undermines the quality of the lectures but it does make me wonder about the care taken by The Great Courses - I've worked as a photoresearcher for a publisher (and am trained as a biologist) so know well the proofing required of this work and it's done poorly in this course and others I've purchased. Some significant topics (e.g. the possible role of the spermaceti organ in buoyancy control, the structure of humpback songs) are ignored in the guide book text. Not providing a glossary is another oversight. Who evaluates this content? I'm guessing not the Smithsonian. So enjoy the excellent lectures but be wary of the guide book and the visuals. And ignore the ridiculous set (looks like the control panel of Homer Simpson's nuclear power plant). Perhaps The Great Courses can put more effort into the guide book and less into the set in future courses.

I agree it’s pretty impressive—authoritative, fascinating, definitely at the college level, and very well done. It’s one of their collaborative efforts with the Smithsonian, and in this instance it works very well, using videos and other supplementary material both plentifully and effectively. Sean Todd is thoroughly impressive—a true expert (a marine mammologist, which skews the content somewhat in that direction), with a pleasant, effective delivery style and a vast trove of personal experience and anecdotes from which to draw. All in all it’s a terrific combination. The lectures on sharks and rays (#11), and all those comprising the final disk, are especially good.

The College of the Atlantic and the Teaching Company are indeed fortunate to have someone of his expertise and talent on board. His college students must love his open and friendly style. A note to the prospective buyer: All you need to do is watch lectures 1 and 30 to understand the importance of global warming to the oceans' ecosystem and the subsequent impact on humans ! I've purchased about 100 TGC over several decades and I'm still miffed by some of the lower ratings' comments. All you have to do is read the title of each lecture and the lecture descriptions on TGC web site to realize what this course is about and that it spends a lot of time on marine mammals. How much information can be put into 15 hours of lecture ? For a 15 hour class there is a huge amount of information presented. Very well done for just 30 lectures !!!

While the Oceanography course was really interesting, this course on Life in the World's Oceans was hands down, the best Great Course I think I have seen. Simple perfection. The design of the set was whimsical and really cool - seeing the "tanks" of fish in the background added to the charm of the course. The professor was really knowledgeable and a natural presenter. If he was reading from a script, it did not show. And as amazing as the information in course was, I cannot say enough about the absolutely top notch video and photo footage from the partnership with the Smithsonian. Absolutely STUNNING. Even the musical arrangement in the course added to the whole package to make this course worthy of six stars if it were possible. Thank you.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding Content and Visuals It is obvious from the first minute of the first lecture that Prof. Todd is passionate, and extremely knowledgeable, about his subject matter. He has carefully crafted these lectures to impart vast amounts of information through the effective use of well selected videos, photographs, animations, graphs, and charts. Although, as others have noted, he has a disproportionate focus on marine mammals, and is, to my taste, a bit preachy from time to time in his frequent calls to environmental arms, I thoroughly enjoyed this course and give it my highest recommendation. In short, Prof. Todd delivers a solid, comprehensive, and entertaining examination of this subject matter that I think the expert and novice alike will find well worth their time, money, and attention. Five stars!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A Solid Survey Course I was rather excited when I saw that the Teaching Company published a new course on life in the Oceans. Although I am rather well versed on this subject, I am always looking for new information.. After watching the course I have mixed emotions. First, the course is well constructed and well presented. Dr Todd is obviously enchanted in his work and this enthusiasm comes out in his lectures. His area of expertise is mammals and the course material is heavily weighed to this area. This is the one area I was a little disappointed in that there is so much about life in the the worlds oceans life other then mammals. I would have liked more discussions regarding the lessor known species coupled with more visual depictions. However, all in all, it’s a good survey course and well worth watching. I recommend it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Under the Sea Life in the World's Oceans is a fine course that goes hand in hand with the previous course “Oceanography”. While Oceanography focuses on the oceans as a whole, “Life in the World’s Oceans” is solely devoted to marine biology. This course looks at the various life forms from the tiniest plankton to the largest whale who inhabit the earth’s oceans. Professor Sean K. Todd is a good lecturer. He tries to be as impartial as he can when dealing with such topics as overfishing, marine mammal captivity. Todd looks at both sides of the issue and leaves it up to you to investigate further so that you have have an informed decision. I think that it is the mark of a good teacher and scientist. I particularly liked his own personal experience with marine mammals like whales. I have loved whales for years so it is really exciting to hear about someone who makes them his life’s work. My one caveat with this course is that it is much too focused on marine mammals. While I like whales and dolphins as much as the next person, I think that I was was too heaven that subject with several lectures focusing on the life and behaviors of cetaceans. If you want to learn more about the amazing animals that make up this course, I recommend that you take a dive with “Life in the World’s Oceans.

I appreciate your efforts to "go green," but I think stacking five DVDs on a single spindle is asking for trouble. The book-like container works much better.

I consider myself to be an environmental social scientist and fairly knowledable on the subject matter. After reading about Dr Todd background and research I decided to purchase the DVD and I'm very glad I did. Dr Todd is exeptionally versed and explains the subject in a professional fluid manner. He covers the microscopic bio diversity to the world's largest marine animals using charts, animations and vibrant photographs. Thermal global and tidal systems, currents, marine invertebrates and plants, mamal migration, exploitation and even human impact is examined. I've had the DVD set for three days and I've completed a total of six lectures. Rated 3 out of 5 by from Confusing and uneven coverage This is the second course I have taken in TGC focused solely on Zoology, and there are only two available. The first, released only a few months ago “Zoology, understanding the animal world” was a general, broad introduction to the field. As I wrote in my review of that course, I had a few reservations about it but still found it highly worthwhile. Solely from reading the title, it is obvious that the current course has a much narrower scope than the previous one – on the face of it focusing only on marine animals. In fact, the scope is much narrower still than that. The course started out very promisingly (lectures one to five) – by describing the marine environment in general: drivers of salinity, drivers of photosynthetic productivity, surface currents, upwelling currents, the marine food chain, etc… This is what you expect to get in an introductory course on oceanography, and since I have not taken one before – this part was new to me and provided a lot of new insight. My main problem was with the scope. The course is EXTREMELY stilted in its focus on marine life. All lectures from fourteen to thirty (more than half the course!!), are focused on marine mammals solely - not marine life in general. Only lectures six to twelve speak directly of non-mammal marine animals (!!!). Marine birds and reptiles are covered together in one half an hour lecture. Appropriately enough, some of the coverage is very superficial. A good example (out of many) is the discussion of the Albatross. Professor Todd tells us that the Albatross possesses unique flying skills that make it uniquely adapted to marine life, but there is no deep discussions on what these skills are – not surprising considering the time the topic was allotted. Even when discussing marine mammals, the coverage was very biased: he repeated several times during the course that there are five distinct families of marine mammals: Pinnipeds (seals and sea lions), Cetaceans (toothed and Baleen whales), Sirens (Manatees and Dugongs), Sea Otters, and the Polar Bears. All these marine families ended up in the ocean through totally independent evolutionary stories. His coverage, however, was almost exclusively focused on Cetaceans and Pinnipeds, and even here – much more weighted whales, and on Baleen whales much more than on “toothed” whales. There was almost no discussion of the behavior and micro-biology of, for example, Manatees and Dugongs other than to say that they are sea grazers and tend to stick to the tropical regions. This tendency was even more problematic, because the lecture titles were typically quite general such as (for example) “marine mammal distribution around the globe”, or “Food and foraging among marine mammals”. The content provided was interesting, but the content was almost invariably exemplified on Baleen whales, and it was therefore hard to tell how much of this could be extrapolated to marine mammals in general. Very confusing... Having said this, some of the content was extremely interesting and new to me. One example of a topic I found new and fascinating is the unique physiology that Sea lions, seals, and toothed and Baleen whales have adopted for prolonged and deep diving – including a fully collapsible lung under high hydrostatic pressure, and a high retention of oxygen in the blood and the muscle tissue. I found this fascinating but was a bit disappointed that the description did not go into a bit more detail. Discussion of marine mammal senses was also very fascinating. Another slightly annoying aspect was that some of the content is endlessly repeated – a good example is the division of marine mammals into five independent groups. This must have been mentioned about five times without any qualification that this has already been said in previous lectures. I know that this is to provide customers of “The great courses Plus” an experience in which every lecture stands independently on its own, but in this course, the repetition was higher than usual and a bit over the top. Professor Todd is a very good teacher – passionate, patient and methodical. He is obviously in great command of the material. I believe that the main problem with the course was that it tried to oversell itself by presuming to cover a much wider scope than it did in fact. Had the course simply been titled “The biology of Baleen Whales” the course would have been fantastic, and I believe the Professor’s delivery would also have been sharper and less confusing. As it is, the course was interesting and provided a lot of new insight, but some of the content was superficially covered and confusing.

I've watched only 5 lectures so far, but that's enough to see that our professor knows his material and is skilled at presenting it. The nature videos are the high quality you would expect from National Geographic. Anyone remotely interested in nature, biology, or science in general will find this course well worthwhile.
