Course Overview

Math for Those Who Want to Probe Deeper

Professor Wolfson doesn't just perform memorable experiments. He introduces basic mathematics to analyze situations in detail—for example, by calculating exactly the speed a rollercoaster needs to travel to keep passengers from falling out at the top of a loop-the-loop track, or by showing that the reason high voltage is used for electrical power transmission is revealed in the simple expression that applies Ohm's law, relating current and voltage, to the formula for power.

You also see how amazing insights can be hidden in seemingly trivial mathematical details. Antimatter was first postulated when physicist Paul Dirac was faced with a square root term in an equation, and instead of throwing out one of the answers as would normally have been done, he decided to pursue the implications of two solutions.

Whenever Professor Wolfson introduces an equation, he explains what every term in the equation means and the significance of the equation for physics.     Understanding physics is as much about language as it is about mathematics. Begin by looking at how ordinary terms, such as theory and uncertainty, have a precise meaning in physics. Professor Wolfson explains most topics clearly, includes numerous demonstrations that greatly aid understanding, and even walks through the math when he notes that will be beneficial to grasping the related concepts. Even with 60 lectures, spending more time to offer additional explanation would have helped me on a few topics. Bottom line is that this course is sure to give students a much better understanding of this foundational topic, and I recommend it.

However, what Professor Wolfson consistently delivers instead is how the physics describing the universe works. That is, the emphasis is on how physics goes about measuring and calculating different aspects of the universe, not on exploring the nature of the universe itself. What Wolfson does, he does admirably; but, this is not what I was expecting or interested in.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not for the casual student Perhaps I should hesitate to give poor/mediocre ratings for this course as the shortcoming are more likely those of the student than the professor. Nevertheless, I will begin by saying that most of the course was of little value or interest to me. Although the math content was as advertised and could be followed by those of some minimal math background, I found most of the mathematical explanations and exercises unnecessary to an understanding of the physics concepts of interest to me. More than once I felt the professor eliminated a more thorough treatment of the fundamental physics to launch into mathematical exercises. I found this particularly frustrating in the electricity and nuclear physics portions of the course. He also refused to provide a more detailed explanations of nuclear weapons design and operations, something I was interested in as I was reading Richard Rhodes books on the development of the first atomic weapons and the H bomb. And I needed help. To fully profit from this course would require a very serious effort by the student, with significant study in addition to only watching the lectures, and something like what would be required in a high school or college course. It is likely I should have taken one of the other courses by the professor which I suspect would be a better fit for me given my interest and motivation. With regard to the Professor Wolfson, his energy, clarity, and knowledge might exceed those any teaching company Professor. He is superb.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Physics Made Simple I've read a lot of reviews for this course that complained about the fact that a lot of math is used in theses lectures but really, there is only one way to address this complaint; this is a (1st semester) college level physics course. Expecting there to be little in the way of math involved is an extremely naive expectation and one that has dragged the overall rating for this course down. I would suggest undertaking the (also excellent) Algebra/Precalc/Calculus courses by TTC as a pre-requisite to this course if your maths is a little rusty. Having recently embarked on a physics degree (inspired partly by this course) I can honestly say that professor Wolfson does remarkably well at keeping the math as simple as possible while still providing fantastic insight into such a detailed subject (especially the sections on waves and quantum mechanics where differential equations are largely avoided). Even now I still turn to these lectures as a brief refresher either before attending lectures or studying for an exam. A truly fantastic amount of material is covered in the 60 lectures. Coupled with any university physics text (proper understanding is only really attained by solving problems yourself) and some effort on the student's part, this course is pure gold. Highly reccomended.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Tour de Force! Kudos to Prof. Wolfson for a highly engaging, insightful, and extremely worthwhile exploration of the major subjects in Physics. I came away with a much deeper understanding of what Physics teaches us about the fundamental laws of nature and how its principles underlie much of what we enjoy as the fruits of modern technology. I was particularly pleased by his focus on three things: 1. The “big ideas” of Physics (e.g., Newton’s great insight that bodies are naturally at rest or in motion, in contrast to the previous age-old idea of Aristotle that bodies need to be pushed to gain motion at all); 2. Practical applications of the Physics fundamentals he presents in his lectures; for example, Faraday’s magnetic induction discovery is shown to be at the heart of our hydroelectric generating systems; and 3. His careful breakdown in clear English of the major mathematical formulas that express the various physical laws and principles he covers in the course. Prof. Wolfson employs a variety of laboratory experiments, videos and photographs that serve well to illustrate his points and maintain his viewers’ interest. You will perhaps be surprised after his well-illustrated lecture on Einstein’s theory of Special Relativity that the theory now makes sense to you, even though it is of course in many ways counterintuitive to think of time as being subject to one’s “frame of reference.” To get the most from this course, I recommend you review your high school trigonometry in order to follow a number of sine/cosine calculations made in the course. Calculus is not necessary even though referred to from time to time. In such cases, Prof. Wolfson simply describes in plain English what the calculus equation is designed to do, so that little is missed in this course by those who do not have Calculus in their background. All in all, one of the most rewarding Great Courses I have taken.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Deep Presentation of Physics Sometimes, while watching a Great Course, I find it very interesting, but then forget most of it when I'm done. That didn't happen with this course for me: this course actually changed the way I think about the world, and I now rewatch individual lectures from time to time to refresh my understanding. I've always had a vague interest in physics, but had never really gotten it. However, Prof. Wolfson's presentation really hit home for me in many of the topics covered. He has an incredible way of getting to the core of a concept and presenting it simply: he uses formal mathematics at times if you want it, but he presents ideas in such a way as to make the underlying concept clear without formalism. I've watched 17 Great Courses so far, and liked them all, but this is my favorite.

Crystal clear explanations and examples with just enough math to illuminate the concepts. Covered an amazing breadth of topics with superb clarity and efficiency. I'd recommend Dr Wolfson's course to anyone.

The Teaching Company editors have injected extraneous audio sounds simultaneous with the professor's lectures that, in some cases, make what he is saying difficult to hear, and provide enough distraction that the material is much more difficult, and in some cases impossible, to follow. I have replayed some of the lecture summaries over several times, and finally gave up, realizing I had no idea what he had just said. They seem to think I want to be entertained, not to learn! Eliminate these noises and I will give the course a 5.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding Course I avoided physics as an undergraduate and my graduate degree was not in a science field. But now as 50-something person, I've been bitten by the physics bug. My goal is to be able to appreciate and understand the the recent breath-taking discoveries in physics. To do this, I need a comprehensive course in the fundamentals. Professor Wolfson does an amazing job of organizing the material and presenting it in an understandable, engaging manner. There is enough math to demonstrate the concepts in a meaningful way, but not so much that a math dummie like me gets lost. The production value is also excellent. If you want to get a non-superficial "lay of the land" in physics from Newton through Quantum mechanics, I think you will be very pleased with this course.

In response to those commenters who found this course too tough to follow, here's my input: For those seeking an "armchair" physics course, this isn't it. The Teaching Company offers over a dozen other excellent physics-related courses for non-scientists, and if you're looking for something you can relax and watch without much mental effort, then you should probably pick one of those instead. But if, like I was, you are seeking a well laid out, rigorous, fairly thorough, algebra/trig level survey course in general physics with all the math, this is it! To fully appreciate this course, I'd recommend reviewing algebra I and the three basic trig functions for a couple of hours before diving in. That's as high as the math goes, but if your algebra is rusty, you could easily get lost. I'm a retired biotech executive who has started teaching high school science as a second post-retirement career. This course fully caught me up on the physics I last studied more than four decades ago, and it made it possible for me to ace my state physics subject teaching exams! This course is also probably adequate to get a college biology major well prepared for the physics subject areas on the MCAT exam as well. Just understand that this is a serious, college level science course. It is not like a Discovery Channel infotainment piece on physics! You'll need note paper, and a calculator, as you should be writing a lot down as you plow through this course. I took over 150 pages of hand-written notes! I'm now in the process of reviewing the entire course for the second time, to prepare me for revamping and updating our high school AP Physics curriculum. This course seems to offer all the content that I need . . . and that my AP Physics students would need . . . to do well on the College Board AP test. Kudos to Professor Wolfson for a job well done! Now, if the Teaching Company would just offer a comparably rigorous chemistry course . . . . !!!

The range of subject matter is enormous and Professor Wolfson has the rare gift of explaining each topic with clarity while reminding the viewer that the topics are interrelated. He strikes the right balance between introductory level but challenges viewers to do some math if so inclined. He weaves historical information with the topic at hand and adds commentary about how new discoveries affected the political, religious and social environment of their day. I could not imagine the undertaking of constructing a course that encompasses this breadth of material and do it with such mastery. Professor Wolfson is to be commended.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent In the past I have struggled with little success. This course, however, opened a wonderful world of Physics for me. I had studied high school physics but found that I couldn't even renew skill at that level on my own or with Khan Academy. In this course the demonstrations coupled with the associated formulas and calculations made a huge difference for me. Even more relevant for me was the explanations of common misunderstandings and careful explanation of nuances that may seem counter intuitive to a beginner. My mind was set at ease as Prof Wolff explains examples clearly where there appears to be a hidden force. My confidence was so low that I assumed I was missing knowledge about "a hidden force" and now I know there is no hidden force to consider. Now I understand clearly what is known and what is not known. I am solid in fundamental thinking and am no longer trapped by assuming I am missed a piece that others know intuitively. Physics in not mysterious and it is not difficult. That statement is a profound leap from the hopeless feeling I had when I started the course. Also, the guide book that comes with the course (not extra) is OUTSTANDING! Thank you so much for giving me the gift of understanding.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Disappointed . . . I have not given up entirely on this course but after only 4 lectures I am disappointed and frustrated. Wolfson's derivations are delivered so rapid-fire that this learner has no time to follow his math, however simple. I listened to Lecture 4 several times, then stepped through his algebra frame by frame but still failed to achieve a sense of mastery. Adding to my frustration, his hand often blocked my view of the notation on the fancy blackboard. I memorized the formulae nearly 60 years ago when I took college physics and passed the exams, but I'd hoped to get more than that out of this course. My own inadequacies? Quite possibly, but I don't give up easily. I'm probably going to return the course to the TC and work my way through the Khan Academy's physics modules instead. Perhaps the TC should consider alternatives to what Khan calls the "broadcast lecture" format. Learners need more active involvement than the outdated, passive mode used here. Many of my same criticisms apply to Michael Starbird's math courses. I have no doubt that the subject material is really, really easy for them, as they both claim in their introductory lectures it will be for us too. Unfortunately, saying so doesn't make it so. I need more deliberate, step-by-step explications with ample opportunities to test my understanding at teach step.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Science the Right Way Professor Richard Wolfson is one of the great Science lecturers. The science lecturers I had long ago just spat out the facts, as they were then. But in Professor Wolfson, the Great Courses has a lecturer who ties the blunt facts together, into a story, a narritive if you will. I like to think of it as Science with Novacaine. It makes learning science so much easier, both for an old goat like myself, and my great-nephew, who also loved his modern, relaxed style. With sixty lectures, the course is comprehensive, and yet has depth. You can get this course with confidence, either for yourself, or as a true gift of knowledge.

This course is what a science course should be from every aspect - comprehensive yet concise, logically organized and focused, historically introduced, theoretically presented, clearly experimentally explained and with a moderate mathematical challenge. It gave me a complete picture of modern science in physics to date. What else more can you ask from this course - unless you aspired to be a Nobel laureate? Above all, I was most impressed by professor's philosophical modesty - the essence of being a true inspirational scientist and educator. Bravo!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Hard to follow but made me curious to learn more The course was okay for its basic introduction of physics ideas and illustrated lab experiments. I do think to really learn it you must have a physics text book at hand and be competent with the math. The topics build on one another so you really have to recall previous lectures. The math at times is complicated to follow, and not terribly interesting to watch. The lectures tend to start out slow, and accelerate, much like the effect of gravity. So by the end he tends to move through ideas very fast, which can be frustrating if you you are not able to grasp all of his intermediate steps and conclusions. But it did inspire me to want to learn it more so I am reading a textbook after watching the whole series. I did purchase the transcripts, and while somewhat useful, they are not a substitute for a good textbook. The transcripts only help to rehear what was said, not explain the topic in a different way. They also lack visuals to help see what is being described.

Physics is reduced to a series of small equations, with very little content. I am not averse to mathematics and enjoy it greatly. But I thought I had purchased a course in physics, not a series of algebra 101 equations. I imagine the boredom of those readers for whom mathematics is not familiar or interesting. Prof Fhilippenco elegantly explain a much complex subject without cluttering it with little formulas. Prof Wolfson could read those lectures to learn how a real university course could be profound and detailed, yet interesting, Instead he pompously wraps himself in his familiarity with algebra 101 and loses the opportunity to explain physics.

The course was well organized with outstanding visuals, experiments, and analytical discussions. Professor Wolfson packs a fair amount of material in each 1/2 hour lecture, and includes experiments with a generous use of outstanding visuals that help in the clarification of material presented. In many respects it was better than the first college physics courses I took years ago, due to his passion for the subject and the use of great experiments. The course emphasizes quantitative results and includes a fair number of examples which augment the concepts presented. I would hope the framework developed in this course sets a model for future science and mathematics courses offered by the Teaching Company.

(Yes,Everyone) Bottom line: Every human being who has time for leisure beyond obtaining food, clothing, and shelter should, in my always humble opinion, take this course. Really. Everyone. My reasons (expanding on Jacqueline's excellent review): - This is as fine a course as I've ever seen on anything: Difficult concepts beautifully explained; remarkably well organized so that lessons, when appropriate, build on each other and fit together like Legos; wonderful, fantastic visuals; equally wonderful and fantastic live demonstrations; covers both the breadth and depth of both classical and modern physics; presented with extraordinary clarity and and obvious, never-flagging love of the subject. A joy to watch and learn. Obviously, if you are a physics enthusiast, little more need be said. You have probably already purchased the course. So, the remainder of these comments are for you NON-PHYSICS ENTHUSIASTS. There are, to my mind, three overwhelmingly persuasive reasons for investing the significant time and intellectual effort involved in taking this course. - First, the practical. Physics concepts (not to mention physics itself) are everywhere in our world. Computers, climate change, electricity, gas and solar power, nuclear energy, wondering why when you ride a bike it doesn't fall over. . . If you are not comfortable with the basics of these concepts you are as a stranger in a strange land. You will live in the world more comfortably, and possibly more capably and wisely, if you understand them at, at least, an educated qualitative level. - Next, the appreciative. Understanding these concepts - even at the basic level presented in this course - will generate a deep appreciation for the capacity of the human mind, and it's ability to understand the world around it. Einstein said "the most incomprehensible thing about the world is that it is comprehensible." To appreciate the extent to which we have been able to comprehend our universe is a breathtaking experience. - Finally, the aesthetic and spiritual. The universe is a magnificent work of art - regardless of your views about the artist! Gaining an ability to understand and appreciate its beauty can enable an aesthetic and spiritual experience entirely comparable in its depth of feeling to contemplating a Michelangelo or immersing oneself in Beethoven or the Beatles. I mean this sincerely. Having said all that, two important caveats: - This course is not presented as an argument for the wonders of the human mind or the beauties of nature. It is a straight-up physics course. Not only that, it is quantitative, at least to the extent that mathematical formulations are provided for concepts whenever that can be done with nothing more complex than high school math. - This course is not easy. It will take concentration and application to benefit from it. For some lectures, more than one viewing, and/or a study of the excellent course guidebook, will be very helpful. *However* - the course can be deeply appreciated at *whatever* level of mathematics and physics background you bring to it. Even if you are math-phobic and are sure that the force between you and the physical sciences is a repulsive one, take the course! You can, if you wish, simply ignore the math. Really! You will still gain the benefits of the course at a qualitative level, and this will still make the time and effort well worth your while. In fact, this course may be even more highly recommended for you than for the naturally science-minded, for it is a rare opportunity to take a guided tour of virtually all of physics that is fascinating and comprehensive, comprehensible and wonderfully presented. Enough, I hope, said.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My math potbelly Dr. Wolfson’s PHYSICS AND OUR UNIVERSE: HOW IT ALL WORKS is an extremely comprehensive overview of physics. He goes as far as one can go using only high school algebra and trigonometry. 60 lectures is nevertheless a heavy time commitment. It is designed, I think, for three basic constituencies: 1) Young adults thinking of a career in physics. At that level, it gives a marvellous bird’s-eye view without forcing them to slog through the minutia of every sub-discipline (mechanics, thermodynamics, optics, etc.) using calculus. That will come soon enough if they stick with it. What is crucial at the beginning is to get a feeling for the whole, its trends, heroes and challenges. Is this fun for them or not? 2) Adults with a science or engineering background who wish to enjoy a good overview of the subject with some of the latest developments. They are likely to nod with pleasure during the whole thing. 3) The rest of us (ROU) with liberal arts backgrounds who may have enjoyed other TTC science courses and sadomasochistically WANT MORE. Let me review these audiences in more detail: 1) My sons are too old to consider physics as a possible career. Still, this lecture series is organized very visually to make each lesson as intuitive as possible. There are plenty of concrete experiments using simple objects, as well as a large flat-screen TV to explain each equation and calculation. Finally, almost every lesson ends with a problem and its solution for the mathematically inclined. 2) Not much to say here. The engineers know their pleasures. The cool flat screen is a clever way to introduce a lot of written material that could have been placed directly on our screen. But then, the reaction would likely be “What? I paid for a DVD and got a PowerPoint presentation?” Watch instead a man standing next to a large flat screen and that’s OK. More eye candy. 3) This is where I stand; very painful. I enjoyed Filippenko’s UNDERSTANDING THE UNIVERSE, Wysession’s HOW THE EARTH WORKS and Schumacher’s QUANTUM MECHANICS. I even lapped up the more philosophical offerings such as Goldman’s GREAT SCIENTIFIC IDEAS THAT CHANGED THE WORLD and Grabiner’s MATHEMATICS, PHILOSOPHY AND THE REAL WORLD. All great courses. So I should be OK, eh? I sat through the complete lecture series (2/day) to get a quick sense of the whole. Very, very impressed. Wolfson moves quickly and concisely. Nooo fat here. But the new concepts pile on rapidly, and since they are closely interrelated across the span of 60 lessons, you are quickly reduced to a wide-eyed, Homer Simpson-like stupor — I even nodded off before my significant other at one mortifying — if you don’t feverishly review the Course Guidebook and/or Wikipedia after each course. A single sitting is obviously only the first step in a long journey for the likes of me. For some of the ROU, in other words, this is obviously a hugely ASPIRATIONAL PRODUCT. We buy it for the person we wish to become, not the sad excuse of a human being that greets us in the mirror every morning. To sum up, this is a very, very good and complete course. But it is also very, very challenging if your math pecs reflect the deficiencies of a liberal arts education combined with middle-aged forgetfulness. If the existing TTC science courses satisfy your needs, this one might be too much of a good thing. If they leave you hungering for more and you love math, I strongly recommend Wolfson's course.

This non-Calculus based college-level introductory course in physics is much more than a survey course because of its depth and its use of enough algebra and trigonometry to let you not only understand the ideas presented but to actually solve problems involving these concepts. The list of topics covered and the pace are almost breathtaking but will leave you feeling quite knowledgeable as well as satisfied. After finishing this course you will understand just how important the study of physics is because of the myriad of situations in which its concepts are essential to the advancement of mankind and why it is considered the fundamental science.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Another Stepping Stone for TTC This course has many novel features including a giant screen TV, multiple videos, experiments almost every lectures and much deeper mathematical explanations of physical phenomenons. All of these combined with the already outstanding quality the teaching company is notorious for, serves not only to enhance the learning experience, but also to entertain and keep our interest peaked. I am amazed how much knowledge I had missed my entire life before watching this course. If you have not been versed already in the teaching company's collection, and you are interested in physics, I highly recommend this course. I had watched Dr Wolfson's first course on relativity many years ago and listened to his course on how the earth's climate behave, and I enjoyed both. My mind was literally changed by the course on relativity, no less. This course does contain a lot of what both other courses have to offer, but better. For those who have seen other TTC course on physics, I think you will really enjoy this one. A lot of new material, and the topics you may have seen before is covered more deeply and with an original breakdown of the different component. The course is also faster and more densely packed. It kept me coming back. Out of all the different courses from TTC I have watched, this is the most fun, deep, and immersive. Thank you TTC, and thanks to you Dr. Wolfson!
