  • Fossil fuels: Coal and petroleum are responsible for the remarkable industrial transformation of human culture over the past few centuries. A sedimentary rock, coal develops in stages with progressively more carbon—which determines how “dirty” or “clean” the coal burns. Petroleum, on the other hand, derives from the fossils of once-living ocean organisms (mostly one-celled plankton) tens of millions of years old.
  • Hydroelectricity: Hydropower provides an estimated 1/6 of the world’s total electricity. The basic principle behind how it works is that, as water falls down through the power plant, its gravitational potential energy converts into the kinetic energy of the motion of the water, which turns the turbines of a generator.
  • Nuclear energy: When most people talk about nuclear power, they’re referring to nuclear fission, or the splitting of large atoms to release energy. Relative to human time scales, nuclear energy can provide nearly unlimited power by processing ocean water for available uranium (only a small amount of which is needed to generate electricity).
  • Solar energy: Solar energy’s main engineering marvels are photovoltaic solar panels that convert sunlight directly into electricity using semiconducting materials that exhibit a photoelectric effect. While solar energy is constantly renewable, it’s also very geographically dependent; for example, solar power is less effective in a place like Seattle, where it rains a lot.
  • Wind energy: People have been harnessing the power of wind for thousands of years with technologies like sailing ships and windmills. But as civilizations have advanced, so too have the technologies to transform wind into a reliable (and renewable) power source. Wind turbines, for example, work like plane propellers in reverse: the natural wind blows through the rotors and then generates a force that powers the engine.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Overly heavy on speculative statistics As a geologist, I thought that, since the professor was a geophysicist, this might be a course to learn something. However, I am sad to report that it turned rather quickly into a listing of poorly explained units and an interminable listing of statistics and speculation about what could be or what should be, or what maybe was in the past, or what possibly could happen in the future. A lot of unnecessary science fantasy based on a lot of meaningless macro-statistics. I was hoping as I listened that this would get better, but with each type of energy discussed, it retained its focus on macro statistics, as if that would explain the energy comparisons. Not at all what this course should have been. I was looking forward to taking his other course on geological wonders, but now I will not.

He's a real expert in a complicated field and presents the material in a clear and concise manner. I learned a lot about the field and would recommend the course to anyone looking to learn about the subject - but be prepared for a lot of concepts and ideas.

This course enriched my background through a fact-packed overview of the science of different energy sources. I bought the course initially because I had taken Prof. Wysession's course on Geologic wonders of the world and liked it a lot. Prof. Wysession is a great teacher with a knack for explaining scientific matters in a simple and engaging way. I highly recommend this course!

It's more elementary than I'd have liked -- I'd like more focus on the technical details. Still, I enjoyed this course and learned some new things. The lecturer knows his material, covers many technologies and their pros and cons, and is fully of helpful analogies and quantitative information.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Less science and more economics than expected I bought this course since it's related to what I do professionally and thought it would provide a good overview of the topic, along with some more in-depth technical insights. After perusing the book and watching the solar energy lecture I think the course may be misnamed. It's more about the economics than the science of energy. The booklet that comes with the course is rather poorly written in general, so when it mentioned the photoelectric effect as the explanation for how solar panels work, I chalked it up to the fact that likely the booklet's writer was not Wysessions himself, but a third party whose understanding of the material was not great. So I went directly to the solar energy lecture and unfortunately Wyssessions invokes the photoelectric effect as the explanation for how a solar panel works. The photoelectric effect applies to metals and would make sense if he was explaining how a vacuum tube works, but for a solar panel made from a semiconductor I would expect mention of n and p type semiconductors, diodes and pn junctions. There is more focus on the level of usage of different technologies, the efficiencies, and cost benefits. In other words it's more information about the economies surrounding the technologies, than the science or engineering on which they're based. I might recommend this to a non technical user, but for someone with a technical background it may not satisfy.

I have done a quick once through and will continue, but I can state that this course is well worth your time and effort. I had previously done this Professor's "How the Earth Works" course and was impressed and mesmerized. So, I had high expectations -- and am not disappointed. I highly recommend both courses.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from QUITE USEFUL BUT COULD BE EVEN MORE USEFUL Students encounter the concept of energy in mechanics at first, subsequently the concept is generalized in thermodynamics and things get a little bit more complicated and ….before you know it energy starts appearing at every conceivable occasion (electricity, magnetism, atomic physics, etc., etc.). So I bought Professor Wysession’s course to acquire a deeper understanding of this central and mysterious, if you think about it, concept. In a way I did get some help from the course because it provided a good and well illustrated review of the multifarious manifestations of the concept on…earth (well, there’s a lot about the sun too but no further astronomical or cosmological investigations). No doubt this is a solid method to appreciate the theoretical concept of energy by familiarizing oneself with the practical realities the concept aims to capture and model. Wysession is an excellent teacher, a first-class orator and a good actor. His approach is distinctly multidisciplinary he touches on physics, chemistry, meteorology, biology, the law, economics, geology of course, engineering, etc. He opts—one wonders whether he had a choice really given a desire to maximize the audience and given the intensely multidisciplinary nature of the course---for an almost completely unstructured account. This doesn’t mean that his approach is disorganized—not at all—but he avoids virtually all formalism, he only devotes minimal time to give the analytical framework behind the practical applications he describes. Instead he relies on viewers’ intuition and common-sense. Well, I don’t think this procedure can provide anything nearing a complete understanding. I would not mind watching another 12 lectures sketching-out (obviously it would be unrealistic to expect a complete treatment since he gives so many practical examples) the theory behind the practical applications—besides, I was hoping for much more thermodynamics. Nevertheless, as it stands the course is still frightfully interesting and conveys a fantastic amount of information. Lawyers, accountants, historians and economists or other social scientists can absorb the info. without trouble and without any grounding in the natural sciences. But natural scientists and maybe even some engineers would, it seems to me, also find information that is new and interesting or at any rate new vantage points from which to consider facts that are well familiar. Finally, most of Wysession’s messages will not depress you, contrasting to what one usually gets about energy issues and humanity from the popular press—his overall message is clearly optimistic and he bases his optimism on…well…science! I consider it to be an achievement that there is nothing cheap vulgar or simplistic in Wysession’s futurology.

His lectures are full of memorable examples and demonstrations, great explanations of difficult concepts and complex interactions. The course content really covers all the basics and beyond of a very relevant and timely topic. He not only covers the science of energy but grapples with the complex economic, environmental and ethical controversies surrounding energy sources and uses in the 21st century. He challenges the listener to consider the big picture and it is refreshing to see a balanced, factual presentation on an often emotionally charged, important topic. There are so many controversial, biased sources of information on this subject and it is refreshing to have one that is trustworthy. Thank you Dr. Wysession.

I think all consumers ought to see this course to get a better understanding of the science of energy. We all tend to take for granted that our cars move and our lights turn on, but it is a complicated process that largely goes unnoticed. And this course is a good reminder of the ingenuity it takes to harness power and deliver to millions. To me each lecture came across as informative and unbiased. Basically, there's a checklist of pros and cons noted for each source of energy. Honestly, I didn't see any "sides" being taken on any of the issues. The set's theme was fine. Demonstrations illustrated a few ideas in each lecture. Professor Wysession has the walk and talk down just right. And his presentations have gotten better and better with each course.

Professor Wysession provides a balanced overview of the development and utilization of essentially all forms of energy, including discussion of the physics, chemistry, geology, biology, and, in the last part of the course, political and economic aspects of each. Unlike some of the other reviewers, I did not feel that he was trying to "lecture" us on the subject of climate change/greenhouse gases, which unfortunately has become grossly over-politicized on both sides of the issue. He was simply presenting the facts as he sees them and allowing us to make up our own minds. There were some surprising facts that were presented. For instance, he shows that driving electric cars is more efficient and therefore produces less greenhouse gases than conventionally-fueled cars, even if the energy used to charge their batteries comes from fossil fuels. He points out that biofuels are generally very inefficient, unless they are based on material that is to be discarded anyway, such as burning trash or used cooking oils. I had realized that there was the issue of using valuable farm land to produce biofuels that would otherwise go towards feeding people, but I had not realized how inefficient these types of fuels are. One of the best aspects of the course was his use of "back of the envelope" calculations to provide estimates of the many numbers that are important in this field. For instance, early in the course, he showed that the basic SI metric unit of energy, the joule, is roughly equivalent to the energy required to raise an apple one meter at the earth's surface (0.1 kg x 10 m/sec^2 x 1 m). And he would repeat these numbers again at various points in the course to reinforce their significance. His presentation style was very good. He always looked directly at the camera and did not appear to be reading from a teleprompter. I only had a few minor quibbles about the course. As mentioned by some reviews of other courses, some of the graphics that were displayed (of which there were many) were not left on the screen for long enough to absorb them. For instance, there was an interesting color-coded map of the world that showed how much the average temperature had changed due to global warming. Before I could see what the impact was in the area where I live (Louisiana) the graphic was taken down. This might be an issue for TGC to address in future courses. I also noted a few minor typos in the on-screen notes. I also wished there had been more discussion of the process of extracting and refining oil and natural gas, since as Professor Wysession pointed out, we will not be able to get away from using these anytime soon. All in all, I can enthusiastically recommend this course to anyone with interest in the subject of energy. Although some math was presented, it should not be a problem for anyone with a high school physics and math background.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lessons on Fission worth the "price of admission" I watched the two lectures on Fission over and over a number of times, until I now have a good understanding how fissionable U-235 is mined/refined, how a nuclear power plant works, and how nuclear power plant waste accumulates and how it must be dealt with over time. There is also a brief introduction to "breeder reactors", and some good reviews of the events that frame the current situation whereby nuclear energy has such a stigma associated with it.

He carefully explains the pros and cons of each source of energy and what might be available in the future. He carefully explains the real cost of producing the various types of energy.

This is a course intended to help a layman understand where the energy he uses every day without thinking about it comes from and the problems associated with it.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from A Major Disappointment Prior to watching this course I was a strong admirer of Professor Wysession. If you glance at my review of his course on the Greatest Geological Wonders, you will see that I thought his presentation was outstanding. That is the reason I decided to buy this course. I presumed he would present an unbiased review of the energy options available and the advantages/disadvantages of each. In one of the first chapters this is just what Dr. Wysession said he was prepared to do. However the longer I watched, the more disillusioned I became. It was apparent to me that he had a deep seated bias against the burning/use of fossil fuels and even if he did not consciously intend to display this bias, it came through loud and clear. I have nothing against the proliferation of renewable energy and believe in its utility, but, I was not prepared to be lectured to by a renewable energy activist. This unmistakable bias lessened the value of the course to me. I firmly believe that if you present the facts fairly, the listener will be able to make his/her own conclusions about what they represent. However, when facts are presented that obviously favor one conclusion, then the overall utility of the argument is degraded. If you are a renewable energy advocate, you will probably love this course. But if you want to hear an unbiased account of energy utility, then I recommend you look elsewhere.
