Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good coverage of wines of Italy. Presenter did a good job in selecting wines to discuss, considering the vast number of wines available in Italy. Presentation was well done and paced well. Perhaps it would have been nice to have her present everyday foods to get experiences of aromas and tastes. For example, crushing some almonds and smelling them, tasting strong tea to get an impression of tannin. Not a negative but wishful thinking on my part.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from No wine snobbery here... Video download Jennifer Simonetti-Bryan (Jenny) presents an easy to follow entertaining guide to the wines of Italy. Since my lovely bride and I are in the traveling phase of our retirement these lectures will help us enjoy the different regions of Italy in which we will be discovering both the wines and foods of the areas. The lectures also provide a template for having a few folks over to share the different Italian wines and savoring, rather that slamming-down (old college habits die hard, my friend), a small array of regional wines, with Jenny there to help explain the nuances. The lectures are pleasant and fun, even when not tasting. I'm sure I'll re-examine all of them on next plane ride to Rome. These 'wine' lectures are on sale often...a coupon makes them a bargain. Recommend!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Guide to Italian Wines So much information in only 6 lectures and at an amazing price! If you want to get started (or further your knowledge) on the wines of Italy, take this course! Prof S-B goes through most of the regions of Italy (by grouping them into larger regions by geography) and gives many wines (both red and white) to choose from and compare. This "short" course can be viewed several times and worked through slowly as there are so many Italian wines to try. Loved it and will definitely be purchasing her other short courses on wine as I know they will be just as informative as this one!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Caution for the Video Download ONLY Rather than the usual expansive Course Notes this course has a Reference Guide which includes a suggested Wine List from each area covered. This is a concertina-type document with three folds, and includes four “pages” of information on each of its two sides. The catalogue describes it as “slim and portable, it’s an ideal companion for shopping and reviewing the material.” Unfortunately this Reference Guide has been copied into the downloadable document as only two pages, each showing all four “pages” of the guide, rather than each “page” being scanned separately. While this can be sized appropriately to be read on a computer, when printed off the writing is so small as to render the document virtually useless as “an ideal companion for shopping.” Hopefully this major faux pas is soon corrected by The Great Courses. For this reason I cannot give the Video Download version of this course a 5 rating for Overall or Value at this time.

If you've listened to and enjoyed her other wine courses, no doubt, you'll like this one, too! If this is the first course by Prof S-B that you're considering, feel free to read the reviews from *any* of her France, California, Italy mini-courses, because they are all very much alike in their quality. If you've only seen the overall wine course, but not one of the France, California, Italy series, you'll find these courses better, on several levels. She's much more explicit about what quality is, and what wines cost. Some of the distracting elements of the first courses are gone. I have a little caveat on this: If you know more about California and French wines, consider getting those courses *first*. Because of my own low level of knowledge about Italian geography, grapes and wine, my comprehension was a little lower than for the other courses. Now, a little bias of mine: this is a good, >dignified< course. But if you want something >funky and fun<, I strongly encourage you to get her Spirits course. Especially if you are looking for a gift for a friend; you can be sure they'd enjoy every minute.

Being from California and having an induced intense interest in wine; I have purchased the set of 3 (i.e., Wines of California, Wines of France and Wines of Italy) as well as Ms. Simonetti-Bryan's original masterwork of 24 lectures, titled "The Everyday Guide to Wine." As I don't wish to repeat the singular and superstructural elements of my previous reviews, I invite you to see my 3 earlier reviews on Ms. S-B's delightful lectures on wine(s). As for this course, it follows in quality her 3 previous offerings. Simply put, it could not be better. The complexities of Australian, French and Californian "denominations", terroirs, varietals, and methods are eclipsed by the wines of Italy. Ms. S-B continues to provide entertaining, informative and , moreover, usable revelations about Italian wines and their growers. Continuing with the logical "domain/varietal" approach to wine analysis, she delves deeply into many esoteric and arcane (yet, enthralling) factoids about everything to do with Italian brands. If you wish to progress beyond the "Riuniti on Ice, that’s nice" stage and really get to know Italian wines, then this is the course for you."

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great introduction to Italian Wines I have always liked Italian wines, but my knowledge was rather limited. The course is well presented and covers a lot of material. I now know the meaning of DOC, DOCG, Riserva and Clasico on the labels and some of the different ways Italian wines are produced. (e.g. Dried grapes for Amarone and the difference techniques for making proseco v Champagne) The course would be great to watch with friends over a few weeks sharing the cost of buying the different wines and tasting along. However, you can still get a lot out of the course just watching and not tasting a thing. Highly recommended
