I had seen perhaps 25% of these sites in our travels and Professor Wysession's information was consistent with what I had learned in doing so. But he opened my eyes to so many others. Excellent photography, nice inclusion of simple experiments, effective teaching style that invited you to share his enthusiasm for each location.

The selection of featues cuts across the range of geological features on planet Earth. His selection is terrific. The level of presentation is also great. Enough technical bacground without getting into the “weeds”. Certainly makes one desire to gain further knowledge, as well as add to the list of locations and features to explore, especially since I have only hit 8 of tge 34 sites described. I also liked his explainations of “why” this site as well as identifying other examples for tge features described.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Many Wonderful Wonders to Wonder At As Professor Wysession shows, Mother Nature creates the most amazing artworks from simple ingredients: rock, water, wind, gravity, temperature, and time. Some of his selections are popular tourist attractions that you might have already seen for yourselves, like Mount Fuji, the volcanos of Hawaii (there are a lot of volcanos in this course), the Grand Canyon, Mammoth Cave, Yellowstone’s geysers, Devil’s Tower, or the Dead Sea. Some of them are huge landmasses like Iceland and Antarctica or vast terrain features like the East African Rift Valley, the Himalaya mountain range, the Ganges Delta, and the Amazon River Basin. Then there are the strange things you may never have heard of, like an underground cavern in Mexico with giant meters-long crystals (Lecture 13), the Indonesian lake Kawa Ijen (Lecture 26), which is as corrosive as battery acid (swimming not recommended), the Siwa Oasis in Egypt (Lecture 32), and the “sailing stones” of Racetrack Playa in Death Valley (Lecture 35), which occasionally slide by themselves across part of the desert floor when no one is watching; geologists have ruled out pranksters as a possible cause. The format is consistent throughout the first thirty-four of thirty-six lectures. Wysessions uses each wonder as a starting point to discuss the geologic processes that created it, whether plate tectonics, rock formation, mountain building, or erosion and soil deposition. In some lectures he illustrates his explanation with desktop demonstrations, like manipulating a slab of clay with a thick layer of peanut butter on top to show in Lecture 29 how the Dead Sea formed. Then he spends the last several minutes describing four or five additional wonders that resemble the primary one. In Lecture 34 on Arizona’s Meteor Crater, for example, he also discusses Vrederfort Dome (in South Africa, 2 billion years old), Sudbury Basin in Ontario (1.8 billion years old), the triple craters of Manicouagan and Saint Martin in Canada and Rochechouart in France (all 214 million years old), and the Chicxulub Crater associated with the meteoroid that killed the dinosaurs 65 million years ago. Rather than focus on a single wonder, Lecture 35 goes through a list of ten mini-wonders. Lecture 36 examines geological wonders on other planets and on the Moon. My complaint are minor ones. Wysessions often hesitates or verbally stumbles a bit while speaking and far too often resorts to the stock phrase “It turns out that…” A slide in Lecture 8 on the Himalayas has an obvious mistake; it says “Top 5 River Canyons,” obviously a carryover from the previous Grand Canyon lecture. Worst of all, in Lecture 5 on lava lakes, he clearly forgot to include Mount Doom in the land of Mordor and the force of its eruption when a corrupt halfling bearing a Ring of Power falls into it! But seriously, this is a great and rich course. I would also strongly recommend Wysessions’ more straightforward and more detailed geology course, How the Earth Works, as a companion.
