Forensic Science from the Inside

One of the nation's foremost experts in forensic anthropology, Professor Murray has participated in hundreds of investigations, involving homicides, missing persons, and mass disasters. In Trails of Evidence, she draws on this extensive experience to show how forensic science works from the inside with discussions of cases such as these:

  • American Eagle Flight 4184: After a commuter plane went down in rural Indiana in 1994, Professor Murray was called to assist with identification of the victims, a daunting task that sheds light on how authorities mobilize to deal with the catastrophic loss of life.
  • The cold case of a missing teen: Four decades after police gave up trying to identify a young woman found dead in a cornfield, Professor Murray examined the evidence and reached new conclusions that helped give a name to a teenager who met a tragic fate.
  • The forgetful killer: A murder suspect agreed to take police to the spot where he buried one of his victims nearly two years earlier—except he couldn't find it. Given only a rough idea of where to search, Professor Murray used a few simple principles to locate the grave.

You also learn about landmark forensic cases that are classics in the history of crime solving, including these:

  • Lindbergh kidnapping: The abduction and killing of Charles Lindbergh's infant son left a host of puzzling clues, including a homemade ladder. When a suspect was arrested, tool marks and other distinguishing features on the ladder were crucial in establishing his guilt.
  • First use of DNA fingerprinting:The death of two teenage girls in central England in the 1980s led investigators to a strong suspect. However, a newly developed DNA technology developed at a local university exonerated an innocent man and led to the real killer.
  • Ted Bundy: This notorious serial killer perfected a modus operandi that allowed him to escape police for years. A master at hiding his tracks, he was finally convicted based largely on testimony by a forensic odontologist, who matched bite marks on a victim to Bundy's teeth.

Learn to Read the Evidence

Unlike what's shown on TV, forensic scientists do not chase down leads and question suspects. Instead, they leave the legwork to the police and use the tools of science—chemistry, biology, physics, and psychology—to uncover the story that carefully collected and analyzed evidence has to tell.

But first they have to know what to look for at a crime scene. Professor Murray begins the course by introducing Locard's exchange principle. Proposed a century ago by the French forensic scientist Edmond Locard, this important idea holds that no one can commit a crime without leaving something behind or altering the surroundings, however imperceptibly.

Armed with the assumption that clues are scattered everywhere, forensic investigators learn how to approach and evaluate an unfamiliar setting. For example, Professor Murray recounts how a police officer told her how to tell the difference between a ransacked house and a messy housekeeper just by looking in the kitchen sink.

In the first section of the course, you explore protocols for investigating a scene, and you probe some classic types of evidence:

  • Fingerprints: Learn the finer points of this venerable tool of identification, including how a common household product, Super Glue, is used to uncover latent prints.
  • Shoeprints:Footprints are more commonly left behind at crime scenes than fingerprints. Criminals can't avoid walking on a surface, even when they're careful not to touch anything with their hands.
  • Fibers:Microscopic fibers transferred to or from a crime scene have incriminated many criminals, including Wayne Williams, convicted of the Atlanta child murders in 1982.
  • Blood: TV dramas get it wrong when they show dramatic blood spatters revealed by high-tech chemistry or lighting. What real forensic scientists see is a smear, made by a perpetrator's attempt to clean up evidence.
  • Handwriting:Signs of hesitation, such as jerky starts and stops, can indicate that someone was trying to duplicate another person's handwriting by looking at a copy of it.

You also hear what goes into investigating a scene that has been nearly obliterated, whether by arson, bombing, or structural collapse. And you learn how the aftermath of an auto accident may hold all the clues needed to determine the sequence of events and who was probably at fault.

In the second part of Trails of Evidence, you focus on Professor Murray's specialty—analysis of human remains—discovering how the time of death is estimated, whether the body is discovered hours or years after the fatal event. She explains the difference between a coroner and a medical examiner. And using some powerful case histories, she describes the roles of various forensic scientists in establishing the cause and manner of death and how unknown persons are identified.

Professor Murray also delves into the psychology behind law enforcement, explaining that effective interrogation strategies are seldom as confrontational as depicted on TV. You will also hear about forensic profiling, the unreliability of eyewitness testimony, and the criminal mind. Then she takes you into the courtroom to see how evidence is presented to the final arbiters of its value: the judge and jury.

I would like to comment that, while I've long been interested in trying out your huge array of offerings, I am dismayed at the glut of advertising I am now receiving following my single order. Every day it seems there is some special dropping into my email... not to mention the snail mail. I have asked three times for a halt to the e-mail and yet it still comes. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Impressed I was impressed with this course, and it is a topic that appeals to many people, especially in my experience, to young people. I listened to this course in particular to the lectures on human behavior and crime, since I teach a graduate course in forensic psychology. Although the professor is a forensic anthropologist, she did an excellent job on these topics, such as behavioral profiling, mental illness and crime, social psychology/jury behavior, etc. In addition the more physical science part of the course was presented in a straightforward, easy to understand manner. I would recommend this course to all listeners.

Establishing "means, motive and opportunity" along with confrontational interrogation techniques play a huge role in popular crime fiction. In real life, none of this holds in court without compelling physical evidence. Dr. Murray's TRAIL OF EVIDENCE is an overview of "forensics 101" — a course on the archaeology of recent events divided by topic and technique. Being an efficient and thorough lecturer, she adopts a top-down approach where techniques and material factors are crammed into each half-hour. Forensics is all about precision, clarity and detail. The pedagogical result, unless forensics fascinates you, is VERY DRY. A truckload of information is dumped with very few stories to connect everything in a memorable narrative arc. Lessons 33 and 34 bring up a few good cases. They felt like an oasis after a long desert trek. With 36 lessons in all, I would have added many more. _________________ All in all, a good course if you are highly motivated or if you have teens interested in blending science with street-level realities, crime, crime fiction writing, journalism, the law or practical inductive reasoning. Even in such cases, you may prefer to approach this course in small doses. I'm not complaining. She is a good lecturer. It's just the nature of the material, once you decide to be thorough. Audio versions are sufficient, if used along with her very comprehensive course guidebook.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fascinating Forensics This is a fascinating course taught by a professor with a passion for her subject and a great ability to explain it. You get the feeling that Professor Murray would be teaching this course even if she wasn’t getting paid for doing so. The course goes way beyond the hokiness of TV (as one would expect), but without going over the head of students lacking a science background. The topic includes biology, chemistry and other technical subjects, but the discussions of these topics are well explained and easy to follow. There are no prerequisites to the course and students with non-technical backgrounds will feel entirely comfortable with it. Those students hoping to hear a few good wars stories won’t be disappointed. Nearly all the lectures are sprinkled with real life stories, many of which will be familiar. (Remember Sam Shepard, the Ohio doctor who was initially convicted of clubbing his wife to death, but later exonerated in a second trial where he was represented by F. Lee Bailey? Blood stain evidence played a big role in his case.) I found myself occasionally going to Wikipedia after some of the lectures to learn more about some of the cases that had been discussed. Some of the lectures are almost bizarre. Were you aware that it’s apparently not that easy to determine whether someone is dead and that premature burials were, until not too long ago, problematic enough that two experts were prompted to write a book on how to prevent them? There are even cases as recent as the 1990s of people waking up in morgues. This is the kind of fascinating stuff you’ll hear about in this course. I’m surprised by some of the earlier reviewers who found the course uneven, basic and not well presented. One thing that’s apparent in reading reviews for several TGC courses is that different students come to courses with very different expectations and react in very different ways. Very few, if any, TGC professors are favorably reviewed by everyone. I accept that the course was disappointing for a few people. Count me among the large majority who thought it was great.

Excellent presentations, interesting, humorous and insightful, with many personal anecdotes. Professor Murray REALLY knows her stuff, and how to present it. We watched all the lectures like "binge-watching" a Netflix series! Well done!

One thing I learned from this course is just how broad the topic pf forensic science. Initially, I thought that the production staff may have padded the course with unnecessary material (as I have seen in other GC offerings) but each topic had its own relevance - even when I found a particular topic dull. The professor is informative, engaging, and on top of her game. Anyone who's hooked on TV shows like CSI and their ever-burgeoning ilk would do well to learn how forensic science is really applied.

My husband and I have taken many many Great Courses and were looking forward to learning more about forensic science. However, this course is rife with sound effects that come along with each graphic or any words on the screen. They are so distracting that we're thinking of moving onto another course. I am giving this course an overall 3 star rating solely because of the sound effects.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from just what we're lookiong for As the homeschooling mom of high schoolers, I'm always on the lookout for engaging coursework that is interesting, approachable and applicable. With a daughter interested in criminology, the excellent presentation of the materials and relationships made to real-life case work, this completely fills the bill. Not only does the presenter clearly grasp the content involved, she's not afraid to let her own passions hang out a little, something with which I completely relate and appreciate. Of the several courses I've watched, she is by far the most comfortable presenting in this format which would have my giving her a bonus star if I could. Very, very pleased with this product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Trails of Evidence review I am in the middle of this lecture and its very fascinating. Though this course is not for the squeamish. If you get woozy at the sight of blood or a dead body I'd think twice before purchasing this course. I'm not a fan of the video lectures because it's distracting to watch lecturer especially if he or she is uncomfortable. But professor Murray is the exception. She is focused and direct but still throws in quirky jokes. It's fascinating because the presentation combines theory and practical application with real events or potential events. If you like mystery/crime shows this is right up your ally.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very interesting course I have always been interested in forensic topics and being an RN have been involved somewhat in forensics in the various hospital ERs I have worked. If I had it to do over again I think I would have gone into forensic pathology but since I am now retired I get to enjoy the course and learn new things. I was sure I would enjoy it but surprisingly my husband could not wait until each evening where we would watch the classes. He also found the course extremely interesting. She is one of the best instructors (and we have many of the courses) and holds your interest. I like that she gives you plenty of scientific stuff but then also gives real cases for examples to help you understand. She was very easy to listen to and I look forward to perhaps more of her courses.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Differentiates real forensics from Hollywood I found this course to be very enjoyable and engaging. The reason I got the course was that I like to watch CSI, and I wanted to learn what *real* forensic investigators do (as opposed to the Hollywood ones). Prof Murray does a good job of presenting the reality of forensic science and also points out where Hollywood gets it wrong. Her personal stories are very helpful as illustrations of the topics being covered. Even though this course is listed under science/math, it is probably 2/3 a science course and 1/3 a “legal/law” course. This is simply the nature of the material – it is at the intersection of law and science. Some reviewers have criticized the course that it spent too much time discussing policy. But I think if you go into the course with the expectation that it is 2/3 science and 1/3 legal, this will not bother you. The course does cover a very broad array of topics (fires to fingerprints, insects to interrogation, blood to bridge failure). I thought that was a positive of this course. There are a few topics that I would have liked to have seen the science covered to a greater depth. Prof Murray goes into depth on death/autopsy and skeletal analysis (since that is her area of expertise). Maybe “The Great Courses” will issue a short follow-up course that picks 3 or 4 topics and goes into a greater depth on the science. Prof Murray’s style is easy-going and engaging. The music is annoying.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Interesting and helpful I write mystery novels and found the course to be an excellent overview of the subject. I thought it would be Forensics 101 and that's what it was. The material was well presented and the examples of real life crimes, graphics and charts were helpful. The references listed in the accompanying guide for books, websites and other resources was also helpful. I would definitely recommend this course and would consider another by this same professor.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Terrific course! Dr. Murray is a great lecturer. Outside of the "muszak" before each course, which was quite annoying, the staging; film clips; and personal vignettes really added to the dynamic presentation of the course. I am now looking at all the so-called "crime" dramas in a new light. I was impressed with Dr. Murray's easy style. Unlike some lecturers, she was never condescening. I knew little about what a physical anthropologist does--I found it absolutely fascinating. Terrific course!

Too much time spent blowing one's own horn; lists of organizations, acronyms, assorted things (example: numbers of deaths for numerous disasters); attempted detailed discussion of peripheral fields outside area of expertise (example: civil engineering).

Rated 3 out of 5 by from High hopes let down. This seemed like an intriguing and compelling subject with lots of scientific potential, but much of the science was neglected. The lecturer is clearly a knowledgable expert, but it seemed as though she was holding back on the details, either because she , or the producers had less faith in the viewer's level of comprehension, or because, as she kept saying over and over - she was afraid of making smarter criminals. If that is the case then what's the point of creating such a course if you are not going to lay it all out? As several reviewers have already stated, much of what she presented was obvious and common knowledge, and could have been left unmentioned. In many lectures she spent half the time citing statistics and social and legal policies that had little to no scientific relevance. Welcome to Sociology 101. There are a few standout lectures that are worthwhile, such as DNA and blood analysis, ballistics, and finger printing. The last 10 lectures are mostly filler. I can't help thinking that the producers were scraping for material to make a longer course so they could charge more. I own over 30 science and math courses, most of which I thoroughly enjoyed, and found challenging enough to watch many times over. This course did not hold up to that standard, and I could not wait to get through it so I could move on to something else.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of the Best Courses Yet A masterpiece presentation by a brilliant, skilled, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic educator par excellence. This course was presented in a way that inspired you to learn more. It presented the information in a scientific manner along with a personal touch by personal experiences on real cases. It is by far one of the best Great Courses I have taken so far. I highly recommend this course to anyone who is the least bit inquisitive about forensic science, how it works, what it entails, and the difference between the real life science and TV and Hollywood presentations of the science. Professor Murray is a gift to education.

The presenter/professor was very knowledgeable but she was not very engaging, I just can't put my finger on it, maybe I just could not connect with her. As some of the other reviews have stated, most of the content is common knowledge and a little more detail would have been better.

The professor articulates clearly and the photographs and diagrams on the DVDs greatly enhance understanding. My one disappointment is that the lecture on arson does not mention recent findings I have heard about or read about -- findings that various false accusations of arson have overlooked the effect of "flashover" (which IS mentioned) creating ostensible "trails of accelerant."

I knew a good deal of the general information but not a whole lot of the really technical part. Professor Murray is a charmer as well as being very clear and extremely well organized.

The lecturer is clearly an experienced teacher, with an easy manner and clear diction, However, I expected to learn much more about how the various procedures are done, rather than just what they are and how used. The cases offered, too, were not as interesting as I'd hoped. I think there was a lot a wasted time in these lectures.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent course! My review is from the perspective of someone not familiar with medicine or forensics but fascinated by the spate of TV shows dealing with the subject. I found the overview in line with the way I learn, and the multimedia additions and change of position of the lecturer comforting, especially if you are watching in the evening. It gets your eyes moving. The photos help visual learners remember items. Most of all however is the clarity and enthusiasm of the professor. It is pleasing to listen to her and she clearly ties the material together and summarizes well. For me this is one of the best courses I have had so far from the Great Courses.

I think that the worst part is the fact that there is no audio-version, yet in many lectures, the only visuals presented are stock images of bridges or babies or just a repeat of the words of the professor w/o even a definition. Not as much covered in detail as I would have liked... a good 1/3 of the lecture is her talking about personal stories and not teaching. Heck, she often takes 5 minutes to go over why she's lecturing on the subject at the start of the video, which is a complete waste of time. When she does go over forensics, it's good and worthwhile. She does not do a good job of bringing everything together either. The Teaching Company needs to stop pushing the videos unnecessarily and the professor needs to organize her thoughts better.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Broad-based Review Professor Murray does an excellent job of thoroughly covering a vast array of topics connected to forensics. Being a fan of mysteries and police procedurals, I found much of the material familiar, but her clear explanations and great organization of topics were very illuminating. The cases she presented were icing on the cake. The only criticism I have is not of the presenter, but as with another reviewer, the incredibly annoying sound effects coupled with the visuals - these really have got to go! That aside, the course is well worth the time and attention it takes.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from subject more interesting than course I can't think of a more gripping subject than crime scene science. However this course is largely tedious. The professor is clearly expert and enthusiastic but the lectures are poorly organized and rote, obsessing over lists of carpet fiber types and the like. Sadly little time is spent applying knowledge and presenting case studies, which is where the real interest is. Too many lectures are just lists, and too few were engaging. I found myself tapping my fingers, waiting for many of the lectures to get interesting, and many did not. An opportunity lost.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A solid course - with a couple of caveats This is an enjoyable course that would be perfect for anyone interested in a detailed discussion about the scientific aspect of crime solving. Her stories: You'll find the stories of crimes and their solutions especially intriguing. Those stories left me wanting more stories, admittedly. Sometimes Prof Murray goes into a lot of detail on terms and definitions, where examples might be more engaging. The visuals of TGC: (This is a comment not on the professor but on the producers.) The studio and video visuals in this course are often over the top. You'll get used to it early in the course, but TGC would be well to back off a bit. Overall: This course wouldn't probably interest kids but will appeal to you if you want the scientific and legal aspects of forensics ... don't need the stories/ examples to keep you interested. I give it 4 stars, since it is a solid course, but not 5 stars, since this doesn't quite equal the exceptional courses, of which TCG has many.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Enough Already! First let me say that this particular course is excellent and the presenter is very good. Any negative comments I might make regarding Prof. Murray's presentation are most likely the fault of The Teaching Co. production staff. OK, so I think I've had it with The Teaching Company if this trend continues. What trend? The pointless, needless and distracting (to me at least) 'glitz' of the courses I have most recently ordered. I have purchased quite a few courses over the years and there have been many appreciated improvements - in video and sound clarity, in literature content and quality, in packaging, etc. But one recent trend is very off-putting to me and that is the choreography and sound-effects. It seems as if all speakers now are directed to bounce left and right, like ping-pong balls and when a new graphic (the graphics have improved too over the years) appears it is now accompanied by sound effects or a musical riff. I may be the only consumer that finds these things annoying and distracting but that is how they affect me. And I certainly have no problem with speakers using written notes in order to help keep on track but having them read the entire lecture from prompters makes the whole endeavor seem very artificial. Some pull it off better than others but the worst of them seem like mechanical devices instead of people. Leave these people alone and let them do what they do and cut out the ridiculous sound-effects - these are college level courses not cartoon features. I DO recommend this course - the content is very interesting and Prof. Murray is a good speaker. I think she would be better without the stage direction though. The visuals are also excellent and plentiful but there is really nothing to be gained by accompanying a crime scene photo with the sound of wind chimes or pixie dust. If this trend continues I will no longer spend my money at The Teaching Company.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from How Forensic Science REALLY Works Societal crime is a fascinating subject as witnessed by the number of popular television shows on the subject. Professor Murray provides a very interesting course on how forensics is really used to solve many of these cases. You will also learn how to become a better juror, a more effective witness, better at evaluating evidence, and gain a deeper appreciation for law enforcement. Dr. Murray is a very knowledgeable and well-prepared lecturer who keeps your interest. In the first part of the course she effectively explains how fingerprints, shoe prints, fibers, blood and/or handwriting are used when investigating a crime. In the second part she uses her area of expertise to focus on the analysis of human remains and uses several real case studies for illustration. She also delves into interrogation strategy as well as courtroom presentation. Be prepared to be educated and entertained in this highly informative and fascinating course.
