Once you’ve mastered how these and other elements work, you embark on a whirlwind tour of more than 150 great structures that takes you from the deserts of ancient Egypt to the skyscraper race of early 20th-century New York to the inventiveness of postmodern architecture.   • Parthenon: While known for its perfect proportions and architectural refinements, the Parthenon is actually a rather unsophisticated structural design—especially in its use of interior colonnades to support the roof.
  • Eiffel Tower: The Eiffel Tower is composed of iron bars arranged in interconnected triangles called trusses that can reach great heights with many small elements and allow for versatility of form.
  • Brooklyn Bridge: The four main cables of this suspension bridge are central to its ability to span the East River in New York City. Each of these cables is built up from over 5,000 steel wires.

Understanding the World’s Greatest Structures also considers structures that, while perhaps less familiar or more recent, are just as important to fully grasping the intricacy of structural engineering. These include Switzerland’s Salginatobel Bridge and the Burj Khalifa in Dubai.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Structural Engineering For Beginners I bought this course to give me a basic understanding of structural engineering as explained through great structures such as buildings, bridges and Cathedrals throughout the world. The course is perfect. Well taught by Professor Ressler who uses wonderful models he has built to explain "form, function and structure" of beams, arches, columns and more. The first nine lectures teach the basics and the remaining lectures show examples of great structures and how they use the engineering principles you learn about in the first nine. This is truly a great course and well worth your money and time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent in Every Way My sister bought this video course for her husband who worked in construction. Neither are engineers, but they both enjoyed it and thought that I would too (being an engineer). I certainly did! I don't know how it could be any better. The first third of the course explained the basics of engineering mechanics. I had had some of this in college, but did learn a few new things I did not know. My wife (a retired English teacher) also enjoyed watching it, and found the engineering concepts well-presented and easy to understand. Professor Ressler was excellent -- well-organized, knowledgeable, enthusiastic, humorous and very likable. Presentation - excellent; scale models and demonstrations - a real plus -- much better than just seeing a picture. The animations and graphics were superb and very helpful. This would be a great course for someone majoring in or considering a career in civil, structural or architectural engineering. I would also recommend it for young people considering going into architecture. If you do a lot of traveling and enjoy appreciating the great structures and buildings of the world, this course will help you appreciate these structures and the skill of their designers even more. In summary -- one of the best courses I've seen.

The presenter is very personable, knowledgeable and entertaining. I love it when he says, "Let's build a model". I look at buildings and structures in a completely different way now. I'm going to watch this again to further consolidate the content. I am so impressed with Professor Ressler that I have ordered Everyday Engineering and look forward to gaining new insights.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Truly the BEST!! Professor Ressler is The Best lecturer of all the classes I have taken from The Great Courses! Hands down. And I've had some excellent professors and quite a few courses on a variety of subjects. Not only does he obviously just love what he's teaching, he's quite an actor! He simply must be reading a script, but it is nearly impossible to be sure of that. He's so animated and seems so natural that you simply cannot be bored. I can imagine sitting in his class live and it sounding just like this. He's funny, at ease and well prepared. And his material is organized into a simple to understand structure starting from the beginning and progressing in a way that even I, with no engineering background at all, am learning far more than I hoped. The models and demos are part of the real reason why. They are basic, clear and highly understandable. You just find yourself saying "Oh! That's how that works!" and you get it. I love all the pictures of structures and architecture, the graphics and computer enhancement making things make sense and all the history he adds in. I am so thrilled with every one of these lectures that I am already dreading coming to the end and want to know what to take next! Does Professor Ressler do a follow up course? Truly this is the best of the many excellent classes I have enjoyed in the short time since I discovered the Great Courses. Thank you, Professor Ressler! Except for the math, you almost make me want to be an engineer!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Is This the Best of the Best? As I am writing the 312th review of this course, there is little new that I can comment about that has not already observed. Nor can I add to the insights of the engineers (many of them civil or structural engineers) who are well qualified to critique from a professional perspective. So rather than comment, excepting in passing on the course itself, this review will focus on a comparative model. To begin General Ressler is an outstanding presenter. His demeanor is always professional, not hurried, but at the same time is energetic and clearly enthusiastic. He does not have the over-the-top, rapid-fire humor of Professor Greenberg, nor the raconteur-ship of Dr. Harl, nor the erudition of Dr. Vandiver nor the calm, sly humor of Professor Kloss, nor the fieldwork of Dr. Barnhart. But all of these professors have some to many valid detractors among TGC reviewers. Statistically, Dr. Ressler’s critics approach zero. Is he best of TGC instructors? No doubt as subjective as this is, he ranks among my top 10. This course is as well organized as one would expect, not only from a TGC course, but from an engineer. The flow is thematic and within that, chronological from establishing enough foundation for even non-engineers and those who have not taken high school physics to appreciate and understand subsequent lectures to detailed analysis of specific types of structures is flawless. Although I am not an engineer, I never felt lost or confused as to the course’s content. The design of the course is targeted to reasonably well-informed adults who are non-specialists. To be sure, there is a bit of math, but no more is required than a bit of being able to remember high school algebra, and even that is not really necessary. Those who have little to no background can appreciate and understand what is going on, those with a bit of high school math and physics will perhaps get a bit more from the course. Those have been exposed to college physics and static/mechanics courses will likely get even more and for the structural and civil engineers who might take the course—well as one excellent reviewer observed, “just sit back and enjoy the ride”. For me, this is among the top courses from a structural perspective. Accompanying graphics are simply outstanding. Every aspect that is explained during the course of a lecture is shown pictorially, usually with the points being made highlighted in the representation. Some of the graphic elements are CAD generated and representational and others are either photographs of buildings or representational sketches. Each sketch, diagram, photo or computer generated model emphasizes the points being made in the lectures. Nothing is wasted. If this is not the best use of TGC graphics I have seen, it is certainly among the top ten. Also supporting the lectures are the physical models that Professor Ressler has built that demonstrate various construction elements—simple but effective. There are only a few other TGC (that I have seen) that use physical props so effectively. The examples that come to mind are Dr. Wolfson’s course on physics and Dr. Filippenko’s course on astronomy (for me this comparison is high praise indeed). This course’s course book may be the very best that I have encountered. While it is not overly verbose, the points that will be made in each lecture is complete. The questions at the end of the lecture are well thought out, and often non-trivial. Here it should be mentioned that while the math in the lectures is quite simple, those who wish for a bit more rigor may well be challenged by some of the questions posed at the end of each guidebook lecture. Fortunately, those questions marked with asterisks are answered in some detail at the very end of the guidebook. Is this then the very best of TTC courses? No doubt this is subjective and has no definitive answer. For me, it is among the very best and for the many, many 5 star reviews, most TC customers feel the same way.

You can't go wrong with any of them. Yes, he's an engineer (so am I) and this shines through in his personality, but he also has outstanding communication skills. I especially like–in all of his courses–the visual aids he uses to help you understand what he's talking about.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Remarkably Creative, Instructive, and Interesting This is a fascinating, authoritative, unusually well presented course. Professor Ressler is dynamic, enthusiastic, and clever, and he uses models and demonstrations (nearly all of which he’s devised and/or built himself) extremely effectively. I first watched the course in 2012, shortly after it was released. Having been a fan of the Teaching Company's courses for more than a decade at that time, I was impressed by the technical improvements that had occurred during the preceding years, with respect to presenting the material. Illustrations, animations, sound, fast-forward and slow motion, and creative camera work are all used to excellent effect, not for show or entertainment but to complement and enhance the message perfectly. The subject matter could have been a drag (including a fair amount of math early on) but Dr. Ressler designed the progression through the 24 lectures both creatively and transparently, keeping a non-engineer and non-math person like me fully engaged and on top of the material. This is a tour-de-force for both the presenter and the producers.

Professor Ressler's presentation of the fundamental concepts of structural engineering is both compelling and easily understandable. His use of models to explain the concepts makes the ideas easy to grasp and the references to historical structures shows how the concepts have been applied over time. I have watched over 80 courses from the Great Courses and I think this is one of the very best.

Dr Ressler has presented a textbook (yep, I went there) example of how a course covering the basic elements of structural engineering should be taught. A course such as this needs to be well-based in the basic concepts, established prior to diving into the world's famous, or even infamous, structures. This is especially true for the average Great Courses audience (maybe a little biased toward the liberal arts...no offense intended). The presentation style is upbeat and Dr Ressler's enthusiasm is infectious. The use of models and animation (thanks to Peter Dwyer) is particularly effective. In my profession (geoscience) we have a friendly rivalry with our engineers (they tend to be more conservative and, well, kinda 'no fun'...if only I had worked with more structural engineers! I will be traveling to Cornwall, UK later this week and intend to visit the Cathedral in Truro...the pre-trip research shows a gothic structure similar to one of Ressler's examples from Lecture 11. I'll be testing myself on that one! Another strong point on these lectures is the excellent guidebook. Many times a guidebook is overlooked in video presentations...don't ignore this one (not only because it gives the answers to the lecture-ending questions), it's a perfect compliment to the lectures! Well done...I will never look at another structure the same way, especially when noticing those pesky cracks in the ceilings of poorly designed buildings. Highest recommendation (on par with my favorite lecturer, Dr Hazen). Get it when it's on sale...a bonus with a coupon.

Would have liked a more rigorous explanation of some of the more technical aspects as the calculation of the moment of inertia in tension elements to include the angular aspects or at least references to another source that is not for engineers. Also wanted a more detailed explanation of 3D wire frame designs as to why some trusses aren't connected by pins and still considered a truss.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Engaging, informative, rewarding I have dozens of the great courses, and this is one of the two or three best; I say this as a novice to this field. The great care the professor took with models illustrated his complex points very well; the structure of the course, with the solid groundwork about materials and basic engineering principles being laid before detailed examinations of particular structures was well-thought and effective. The professor's presentation was clear and engaging without any of the content being "dumbed down". I enjoyed listening to the several of the lectures more than once (the lecture on domes was especially eye-opening and enjoyable) and am moved to write this review after a recent trip to Europe. I did not purchase the course for this reason, but I did have occasion to explore some cathedrals in Europe and was amazed at how easily I could evaluate several of their features that I would otherwise have been completely ignorant of, or overlooked altogether. I am an intelligent (I think!) amateur, a political science professor with very limited background in technology. Not only do I feel much more informed about great structures now, but my trip to Europe was much more rewarding. One of the greatest of the "great" courses, I think.

I now have a greater appreciation for structures now. The instructor was very good. I'm an engineer. You must get the video version to see the demos.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic all around! Dr. Ressler is one of the best professors I have encountered. He is an excellent presenter, breaking complex ideas down so even notices can understand. He uses demonstrations to illustrate important points and possess a subtle humor that is endearing. His lectures are all structured effectively to emphasize one or a few main ideas, which he introduces at the beginning, explains throughout and re-iterates in closing. The computer modeling and real world images are integrated in a way that greatly enhances the entertainment and learning values of this set of lectures. I highly recommend this professor and this set of lectures!

Professor Ressler’s diagrams, photos and examples – along with his enthusiasm were exemplary in explaining and showing the progression of the engineering principles throughout history – a subject that typically could put a sack of cement to sleep with boring details and [essential] nerd math. Well done!
