Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Interesting Insight I have only gotten half way through the lecture, however it provides many very interesting insights on the war and its origins in both theaters which were extremely conflicted and convoluted. What was novel to me was Hitler's minute attention to public opinion and his not putting Germany on a war footing until 1942, by that time almost all of Europe was divided between he and his allies.

How can someone take a subject as filled with passion and emotion as WorlMidd War II and make it dull? When I was in college I had a professor nicknamed Dr. Sleepy because he put every class to sleep. Dr, Childers - with the exception of his final lecture - did the same. He seemed to know the subject but he read from his notes constantly and had pauses so long I was worried the TV had stopped. The lectures were attended by a small group of men seemed never to move. Perhaps I knew too much about the subject or expected more - whatever, I was disappointed

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great insight into strategic aims of both sides This is about as good a course on World War II you will find anywhere and this assessment is made in light of the enigmatic statement that Professor Childers is both maddening to listen to and a joy to listen to. On one hand he is difficult to listen to because he is not the best of speakers: his discourse is littered with “uhhs” and long stretches of silence (in mid-sentence/thought!) as he seemed to search for the right words. He would start a sentence but then stop a few words in and say something else. He also had a tendency to speak softly and fast at certain times making it difficult to follow without re-playing numerous times. On the other hand his content is simply riveting at times. He does not just relay facts but tells the narrative in an engaging way, drawing you in. He particularly excels at providing and explaining strategic war plans on each side and their rationale for specific decisions and intentions of leaders at each step/phase of the war. Sounds straight forward but it is missing from a number of other courses. His capacity in this aspect earns no less than five stars. But the other distracting habits prevent me from being to rate this a five star course in good conscience. While he did have some comments on the rise of the U.S. and the Soviet Union post 1945, there was a general lack of discussion of post-war Europe and Asia. A head scratching omission was the Soviet Union's successful invasion of Japanese Manchuria at the end of the war. There is a mention that the Soviet Union had declared war against Japan but the invasion was not referenced. While this may or may not have contributed to Japan's surrender, this pressure from the west surely should have been mentioned. A minor warning: it is difficult to follow some of the discussions without a map since the professor will refer to armies by their general’s name or countries by their rivers or landmarks. Unless if you have a great memory or are well-versed in geographical landmarks in Europe and the Pacific, you may want a map on hand when listening. In the end I was left with a positive outlook on the course and wish he had taught the World War I course instead of Professor Liulevicius. While I typically enjoy his work, I feel like the pieces of his course that focused on the military history of the Great War were lacking and he did those a disservice. I have little doubt that Professor Childers would not have. I recommend this course to anyone wishing to learn not just more about the events of World War II but also the pre-war landscape of Europe, Asia, and the United States. This is where I learned the most: the build-up of the German army post the Treaty of Versailles, the annexation of Austria, its hostilities in the Rhineland, the Sudetenland (Czechoslovakia), Czechoslovakia proper, and Poland, Japan’s war with China, and its relations with western Europe and the US prior to the war. I am looking forward to his other course "A History of Hitler's Empire, 2nd Edition".

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good content but slow paced I’m about half way through this WWII course. Each lesson contains interesting facts and insights I’d never heard before. And it covers aspects from the perspective of each country involved not just one angle. However the material moves slowly and is somewhat repetitious. The lecturer is not animated at all. More use could have been made of historic photos and videos. Still, I would recommend this course to anyone interested in this important piece of history.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Comprehensive Presentation of Complex History I especially liked Prof. Childers' descriptions of the cultural and political events leading so many countries into this worldwide conflagration, how the massive challenges were met, how the tides of war swung, and the resulting new world order in the immediate aftermath. As in many conflicts, he also reminds us how the absence or presence of key bits of information, leadership choices, and sometimes mere coincidence, can alter the outcome of pivotal events. Where scholarship opinions may vary on some topics, Prof. Childers provides a rational and concise basis for his own views. The immensity of the subject left me a bit drained by the end, but I know I'll return again to several lectures as I continue to reinforce my knowledge.

The individual battles came to life and the magnitude of the losses were detailed. In addition his explanation of the lead up to the war illuminated the need to bury the hatchet after a conflict to avoid recurrence.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Early thoughts I am just starting the third lecture and would say the content is good and Dr. Childers is good (this is my second course by Dr. Childers), albeit he uses a lot of fillers for a professional lecturer. The biggest thing I notice is, this must be an older course as the video quality is well below most of the other courses I have watched.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Good for a course for 1995, but very dated in 2019 This course was put together when TCG was learning how to film a lecture. The background features pictures pinned to fabric cubicle divider. There's no teleprompter so the professor looks down at his notes for nearly as much time as he glances at the "audience" of 6 people who look bored. I think that if this were redone with 2019 tech rather than 1995 tech, the course would be much better. The professor was good, but limited to his resources. There are long pregnant pauses as the professor tries to find his place in his notes. Much of the information that was classified during the war is now available as the 72 years is up. The course in audio would be a better choice if the pauses were removed. I find my fault is with TGC rather than the professor.

Long pauses while he thinks about what to say next. Mumbles. Stumbles over words. With reference to the next question, I would recommend it on the basis of content only.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 20 years old but still up to date and terrific I got this course as part of the set with Vejas Liulevicius's World War I course, which was the primary reason for the purchase. However, this course proved not only just as interesting as the former but substantially more emotionally involving. I found myself looking forward to the next lecture each time, more so than with any previous course. Professor Childers is not as fluent or dynamic as Liulevicius—he pauses frequently to consider his words, he speaks with less animation, and his voice sometimes cracks—but he has organized the enormous quantity of material involved into a coherent and truly compelling narrative. He avoids editorializing and remains impressively objective, letting the events speak for themselves—and given that the latter include the Holocaust and other instances of almost incomprehensible brutality, especially in the Pacific, the impact is emotionally moving in ways that no other course has been. Although his course is now 20 years old, in my opinion that doesn't matter. The staging, visuals, and other production elements have evolved so that these lectures looked different from those in the newer courses, but that was not actually a problem. Maps, vital to understanding the material, were used extensively and were very effective.

I lived through WW II in Europe being in the middle of it I didn't see many of the details that were masterfully presented by Thomas Childers. I would recommend the course to all but in particular to young people who have no idea of WW II history but should learn from its horrible consequences.

I have a severe hearing problem and especially appreciate that there is no background music, just facts. As a person with a hearing loss I depend on the ability to read lips. When the speaker is off screen, looks down at notes, or turns his head away, I loose part of what he is saying. I have a cochlear implant and I listen to the tapes to set the track to learn to use the implant. My hearing is no longer nerve conducted, but now is bone conducted. It would be a great help if they were captioned, so those who are hearing impaired could get the full story. I am guessing most people who would buy this tape would be older, and many of us are hearing impaired.Thanks for doing what you do.

The course organization is easy to follow and builds upon itself in a logical manner. Though it might be good if only listened to, the graphics that were used in the video presentation really enhanced the course. I highly recommend this course.

In the Pacific conflict I gained the impression that only the US was involved. At least some acknowledgement of the contribution of allies should be made.

As such, it touches on all the Stations of the Cross, but maybe not as thoroughly as some may want. Stalingrad and Midway are only two examples of key battles that I thought were underdeveloped. If you are looking for a good overview, purchase the program. It is not perfect, but still pretty good.

I think I would have liked it more though Professor Childers is clearly well informed but needs to be smoother in his delivery. I found his delivery halting and wanted a faster pace as well. Amon certain points he is as repetitive although the point had already been made. Less repetition would leave more time to convey lore information and value.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from A course full of inaccuracies. Beware the professor who gives a course out of his area of expertise. Professor Childers may know the social history of the war well, but his is completely out of his depth when discussing the military aspects of the conflict. I managed to get through about a third of the course before getting so frustrated with his errors I couldn't go further. Here's three. The Poles did give the "Enigma code machine" to the French, but it wasn't a code machine, it was a cipher machine. Further, the machine wasn't the key, it was the "bombe," an analogue computer that the Poles developed to help break the ciphers, that was critical. Second, Professor Childers is incorrect that the French army did not have telephones, and they therefore had to use couriers. The French had an excellent telephone network, but the rapidly advancing Germans cut the lines. What the French lacked were radios to use when the telephone network failed. And couriers were needed to deliver plans, reports, and maps that cannot efficiently be dictated over phone lines. Indeed, even as late as Vietnam, we were still using couriers. Third, the British bomber offensive was not directed at the German industrial infrastructure. From the very onset, it was specifically directed at German civilians in an attempt to kill or "dehouse" German workers, and to break civilian morale. In short, this course is riddled with errors. Don't take it.

Since all my knowledge of the war had been based on movies, it was a delight to learn how all the names and battles fit together. Also, his maps were very helpful in understanding the war in the Pacific. My only wish is that his maps would have been included in the study guide booklet.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Falls far short of a comprehensive course on WW2 the lecturer completely overlooked much of the story of the Eastern Front. There was a chapter on the beginning of the Barbarossa campaign and one on Stalingrad with short shrift to the rest of the Russian front. This is unacceptable in a college level course and any good military historian knows this.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Course I've Ever Taken on World Ward II This was by far the best course I have taken on the Second World War. It was comprehensive and provided me with much additional information and context that I had not had in other courses or documentaries which I have seen. Dr. Childers close of the course was both chilling and poignant.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Solid Overview Yes, this recording goes back quite a bit, but I just don't understand why so many people have such a problem with that. How much WWII scholarship has changed since this recording? I can say there is not a single fact Childers shares that hasn't since been discovered incorrect, but on the whole I can't believe that the age of the recording itself is such an issue to so many people. It's not like a 1997 overview of advanced computers, which would of course be useless today. I don't tend to grade these courses on the font of the visuals, or the shape of the bullets on bullet point lists as some do. In fact I think some of the newer course go too far in trying to be flashy and trendy, what with courses on interior design on some such. But this is a history course, and I rate them on content and presentation. On those grounds, I am happy to have bought this one. Yes, the professor does read from notes, and no I haven't the slightest problem with that. There were some lengthly pauses here and there when he may have lost his place, what what is "so 1990's" about that? Someone reading from their notes in a lecture is a 1990's thing?? Childers is nonetheless easy to listen to. Casual. To tell the truth, the folks in studio laughed more during this presentation than in any other I have purchased, so there must be something to his style. Content wise, it is an overview. There were some things I perhaps would have liked to know more about, but there are other things he covered well. Such is the nature of a sprawling topic such as this. My foundational knowledge of the war is without a doubt improved, and I will refer to any given lecture again to keep my knowledge in tact.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Balanced Presentation I listened to audio version, so he didn’t seem to be reading, and his presentation was organized and accurate, although obviously a little dated, since it was recorded 20 years ago. World War II puts its emphasis on military history (very little of the promised social history.) It is a generally accurate summary of WW II, although he avoids mentioning idiocies that SOE, run by hopeless old-boy network, committed during the early years of war or contributions of Poles to RAF, in becoming their best pilots. Nor does he mention that Poland and Czechs were abandoned by US & Britain as the war would down.
