Course Overview

If your life or the life of someone you love has been hijacked by pain, you’re not alone. Pain affects more Americans than diabetes, heart disease, and cancer combined. In fact, one out of every three U.S. adults lives with chronic pain triggered by arthritis, chronic fatigue syndrome, disc problems, fibromyalgia, headaches, sciatica, or other causes. Almost all of us have experienced acute pain at some time in our lives from an accident, surgery, or dental work, for example. But chronic pain is different. This is pain that persists for months or years after the initial pain source has healed, or is caused by long-term illness or disease. Or the cause might never be determined. In The Mayo Clinic Guide to Pain Relief, Barbara K. Bruce, Ph.D., L.P., a clinical health psychologist in the Mayo Clinic Department of Psychiatry and Psychology and clinical director of Mayo Clinic’s Fibromyalgia Treatment Program and Chronic Abdominal Pain Program, provides a tried-and-true framework for coping with chronic pain caused by most sources. While acknowledging that everyone looks for a cure and wants their pain to come to an immediate and complete end, she points to a different approach: “I don’t want you to wait for a cure or pain relief before you move back into your life,” she says. “I want you to begin living your life today.”

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Relief is Possible! Not only did I learn details about the cause of my pain, I learned techniques that I can use to modify and alleviate the pain. Dr. Bruce is an excellent speaker––one seems to be sitting in front of a friendly healer rather than a professor. Also, her guest lecturers provided valuable information in a comfortable setting. If this were a book, I'd have to say "I couldn't put it down." As it was I watched at least four lessons at a time without stopping.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from For *Chronic* Pain Only At the outset, it should be noted that this is not a course on relief of pain but rather a course on the relief of *chronic* pain, i.e., pain that persists for more than three months. The course addresses both conventional treatment (e. g., medication and exercise) and also alternative treatments (guided visualization, yoga, tai chi, acupuncture, dietary supplements, etc.). Interestingly, the lecturer is not a neurologist or a psychiatrist or medically trained at all; rather, she is a psychologist. However, she is a pain management specialist at the Mayo Clinic. At times in the course, where specific medical expertise is required, she turns the microphone over to a more appropriately qualified speaker. Unfortunately, when she does speak to the subject, she does so without emotion. Her presentation style is clearly below TGC average. The video version is definitely better than the audio version. Not only are there visual aids would be helpful at a number of points but the last lecture is dedicated to showing physical exercises and relaxing exercises that really must be seen in order to be effective. This course is useful for somebody who is already undergoing professional medical treatment for chronic pain that has persisted for more than three months. This course can assist such a person in understanding the treatment and in interacting with the medical professional. For the rest of us, meh. Having said that, Lecture 8 on sleep and the Lecture 12 exercises are particularly useful for a wide variety of adults.
